Ash Wednesday
One benefit (if I could call it that...) :| of respectful burial and giving someone a final resting place is that I think helps give the grieving some closure. I always felt that having someone with you as a diamond or in a urn in your house, prevents the grieving from truly letting them go. People may find it comforting to think that they are "with them" but it contradicts the idea that earth really isn't our final place of rest and we should be praying for souls entering heaven. My mother had a viewing and mass in a simple casket but was cremated afterwards. Honestly I don't remember a lot because I didn't know my butt from my elbow at the time because of the shock, but I did know she wanted cremation for her final burial, but the priest recommended having the body present for the wake and funeral itself. Knowing my mom she would have followed the priest's suggestion but it also respected her last wishes. Always an interesting discussion....putting the FUN in FUNeral... hey hey hey. YHZRosko
I can't imagine wanting to do this! It just strikes me as so odd! I mean, you would esentially be turning your loved one into a piece of bling. I just think of cases like when people lose an engagement ring or wedding ring, which can be devastating enough. Can you imagine wearing your friend/relative on a chain or ring and it breaks or you otherwise lose it? There would be absolutely no reminder of that person at all, and you'd have to live with having lost a person's remains down the shower drain or somewhere equally awful. Or being robbed or having the diamond found by someone else after losing it and your loved one ending up in a pawn shop or on ebay. Awful and creepy.
