Best Acne Treatments?

OOOH OOH I GOT THIS

Okay so depending on when homecoming is and how bad your skin is, I'd still recommend makeup. Because Homecoming! You should post in the Ladies Get Dressed Up thread when you have pictures. :)  Be wary of face masks and DIY stuff because it can turn nasty fast, because you've got sensitive skin and most of them don't actually work well anyway. The exception is always white paste toothpaste as an overnight spot treatment. That stuff is MAGIC for drying out a whitehead. Also if you really want a mask for something with black heads try eggwhite, using toilet paper or kleenex as strips, like a pore strip. Stir up the egg white to break it down a bit, then soak the strips of kleenex in it, scrape off the excess white, and put it on your face (nose, chin, whatever). Let it dry and peel it off. It'll probably hurt, but it'll rip the nasties out of your pores.

ANYWAY.

First, drink a ton of water. Half your weight in ounces. Every day. It'll help flush your system. And don't touch your face any more than you have to. If you put your phone next to your face and you notice you've got some pimples there, wipe your phone off with alcohol once a day. Do you have a regular face-cleaning routine? What do you do already?

Second, do you have acne because of hormones, oiliness, or dryness? If it's hormones, I can't help you. If it's dryness, find a good moisturizer with salicylic acid in it or at least one that says it's non-comedogenic (aka won't clog your pores).  I use clean and clear - the one in the white bottle with the purple top. If it's oil, then we need products.

There are two main acne products, I recommend using both. Salicylic acid eats the top layer of oil to dry out everything a bit, and is a bit like an exfoliant. Benzoyl Peroxide will dry you out more and kill bacteria (and bleach your fabrics and hair, so be careful! only use a little!). Use something with salicylic acid as a face wash if you're oily (only a couple times a week probably) and benzoyl peroxide to nuke any individual pimples, especially white heads OR to prevent anything from getting worse if you accidentally pick at something.  You only need a 2.5% BP strength, they'll sell anything up to 10%, but it's really unnecessary.

As for products, like I said I like Clean and Clear as a moisturizer. Aveno is also good. I like Neutrogena products for daily face cleaning, with a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment for individual zits. Cetaphil is a great daily cleanser that won't leave buildup on your skin and is great for sensitive skin. It doesn't have any acne products in it, but it's great all the same.

I know I'm telling you a LOT of probably unnecessary stuff. But everyone's face is different and people tend to get acne for different reasons, so I wanted to kind of throw a lot at the wall and see what sticks for you. :)

You really shouldn't combine salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. It can result in a chemical burn. Especially if a person's never used it before and has sensitive skin like the OP.

I've also read that the toothpaste spot treatment can burn your skin too. Never tried it though.

OP, it sounds like we have the same skin type. I use Cetaphil face soap for dry and sensitive skin. It's the ONLY facial cleanser my skin can tolerate. Stay away from cleansers with a zillion chemicals.

Depends on the severity. For real bad acne you may need oral therapy, Doxycycline 100mg by mouth twice daily will knock it out... but see your dermatologist

For my sister and I, salicylic acid is straight from Satan. It makes our faces so dry. This makes it very difficult to find acne cleansers, because 99% of them use salicylic acid.

Doxy is miserable.  I took it for a sinus infection and had major side effects.

If it was abdominal discomfort, nausea, and/or diarrhea, someone should have told you to take it with a meal or snack.

In my experience with acne, the best treatment is having good genes so that you dont get it in the first place.

Second best treatment is to wait till you grow out of it.

I am 25 years old and I still get a tiny bit. No product I ever used actually helped reduce it. I still had breakouts and blah blah blah.

For some people, all the million types of silly marketing products work, but they didnt for me :(

If you pay attention, 90% of them all have the same active ingredients, so if that doesnt work for you then I dont know what to say.

Homecoming is coming up so I need to have clear skin for that so I was wondering if anybody knew of any simple and easy that can be made at your house or be found at Wal-Mart of Kroger's.

I have sensitive skin and my complexion is super light.

I have VERY sensitive and fair skin and cannot use any salicyclic acid or benzoyl peroxide (the common ingredients in acne treatments).  I've found that the best stuff that keeps my face clean and clear is Noxzema (I buy the Equate version at Walmart which is cheaper) and a complexion brush (like a baby brush and it has gentle bristles).  :)

One day out of 10 days I slipped and took it too late after a meal and I was down for the rest of the day.  I had sun sensitivity too.

This is true.  Growing up there wasn't much I could do to avoid pimples.  Now there's not much I can do to get one.

A healthy diet will clear up blemishes quickly; apples, carrots.  Stay away from sugar and greasy foods!  An OTC face wash that has 10% Benzoyl and Peroxide in it but you must wear sunblock as Benzoyl and Peroxide make your skin sensitive to the sun.  Quick spot blemish remover (well it kills them much faster) is using honey on the pimple, clean your face before bed time, take a q-tip put some honey on it and put honey on your zit, then place a bandaid on it so you don't get honey all over your bed/pillow.

If you still have pink spots but no more zits, please use some makeup.  Makeup enhances one's beauty ;)

What do you mean it was a rather long lunch break? My break is from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and then I have to go to music/band class. 30 minutes is not long...
