Just think of it this way: there are lots of Franciscan orders. New groups form from older groups. They are canonically distinct but are the same charism/spirituality and emphasis an aspect of the charism in different ways. Or look at the different congregations of Dominican Sisters. They all share much in common but each has it's own "flavor". Ann Arbor is from Nashville but has a distinct tone to their community. It's pretty much the same.
