Confirmation Saint Question

By asking this question, I should be turning in my Youth Minister card promptly, but for the life of me I can't remember the answer and I can't find it in any of my normal resources.

For students choosing their Confirmation Saint name, a student may choose their Baptismal name, any holy Biblical Name, and any Saint approved through the 1969 and most recent Saint Calendar reforms. Which brings me to my question, can students (or adults) choose the name of someone declared Venerable or a Blessed?

I am having such a facepalm moment.

God bless-

It seems like you can, though I don't have a source. I think I know someone who took a Blessed as their Confirmation name.

Someone who was confirmed with my brother on the day JP2 was beatified took him as his Confirmation Saint.... However, I have no proof texts for you and I've never bothered to look up any rules.

I know at least two people who have done so. However, as to an official statement of it being an option, I have none.

Choosing a confirmation saint isn't really part of the sacrament, more of a tradition that's paired with it. Now it's more about choosing a patron. So yeah, I think Blesseds and Venerables are a go, unless your bishop has other instructions.

There's nothing in canon law about Confirmation names, the closest I can find is baptismal names (canon 855), and all that says is that you can't pick a name that's contrary to Christian sensibility. :)

I choose JPII for my Confirmation name last year. I asked our local priest if it was okay and he wrote the bishop. The bishop said I was allowed.
