Resources For Learning About Catholicism

I'm going to second Catholicism for Dummies - it covers a lot of ground, including some of the dogmas and doctrines that those looking at the faith usually have problems with (Mary, contraception, etc.)

Many of the churches in my diocese have CD kiosks at the back of the church from Lighthouse Catholic Media. http://www.lighthousecatholicmedia.org/

Not everybody likes to read--listening to CDs in your car is the best way to learn for some people. It's like a $3 donation per CD and the topics will change out frequently. Check the back of churches until you find a kiosk. They seem to be everywhere. It's kinda like a Catholic Redbox. haha

I would give him something devotional - maybe the life of a saint, or a gentle book on prayer. I would recommend The Imitation of Christ, but that may not be quite the right choice. You know him best so you should be able to pick something. :) I just think that too many books on apologetics can be overwhelming - it needs to be a simple balance between an introduction to Catholic thought and a real taste of Catholic faith and life.

I will pray for you and for him.

I should re-read Mere Christianity. I read it long before I considered myself a 'trad', but shortly after the time I decided to start taking the faith seriously.

Why'd you become a trad?

Enjoy this cake instead

I guess I have simply never found anything so quintessentially Catholic as Catholic Tradition.

Nah, Nihil is going to stay a Trad. I've been watching his journey from merely orthodox to Traditional for almost four years. He's hooked, and it's good for him. (Yeah, I've been a member of Phatmass for THAT long, and you losers STILL haven't coverted me!)

Plus, Nihil married a Trad (and a beautiful, witty one at that), so in time he will be the paterfamilias of a family of small Trads. Learning Latin is good for kids.

Although at this rate they will probably learn more Chinese than Latin. :hehe:

I thought most Anime was in Japanese. :|

Yes, but I am learning Chinese. :)

For that reason though, Japanese will always be towards the top of my list, if I should ever want to learn another.

Well if you watch enough of it, and I think you may lol, then the kids will pick some of it up. One of my nieces has picked a lot of it up, she also runs around like they do on Naruto, and she will rasengan you if you're not looking. For a 3yr old she was a lot of チャクラ.

Will they be Tradlets?   Tradeens?   What WILL you want us to call them when you become a bonafide Pater?

And YOU, for that matter -- Pater-San sounds funny....

I would suggest "Catholic Christianity" by Peter Kreeft, published  by Ignatius Press (an always reliable publishing house, I've found) and available via Amazon

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I'm trying to keep out of it, but I'll pass them all along to him. And please keep us both in your prayers. :)
