ardillacid
But seriously bro, have a beer or something. Normally arguing with you can seem fun, but I'm not getting the happy vibe from you today. You seem extra uptight. It's ok. we can come back here and play another day. This seems to happen periodically :detective:
cartermia
FP, there is so much industry within the coal mining business, it is not just the coal miners. I was looking up a rough estimation for coal miners only and (using CNN reports) in 2012 there were 137,361 coal miners. This does not include all of the other business that are based on coal. I estimate there is one coal miner for every 10 people who work in the coal mining industry. The Appalachian regions are already below the national poverty level and if you want to switch to a different energy source then think about what you are doing to the people who work in the coal mining industry. Sorry if I am using an emotional effect on my argument, I am a teenage girl we tend to do that. If you say that I do not have a place in this conversation because of my age then you are surely wrong. Why would I ever mention your age? I don't even know what it exactly is, to be honest. :P I know that you're younger than I am, but I'm still really young and regularly experience people belittling my opinions due to my age, and I would never dream of doing it to anyone else. As for what you said, I have no doubt there are tons of jobs in the coal industry. There are also thousands of jobs that would be lost if we had our dream and shut down Planned Parenthood, too. I'm not saying coal mining and abortion are on the same level, but it's the same principal: You can't not shut an industry down simply because jobs will be lost. However, I propose what I have been proposing this whole time: Gradually end the coal industry and replace those jobs with a different fuel industry, eventually shutting down the coal industry completely. Coal mining is doing terrible things to the earth, and it is our God-given duty to take care of his creations.
cartermia
I mentioned my age because my science teacher is always like "Ha, your just a teenage girl. You don't know what your talking about." Basically but he does it in a nicer manner then what I just said. Sorry, but if God gave us a plentiful amount of coal why wouldn't he want to use it? I see what you are saying about weaning people off of the coal industry but I don't see why we cannot use the HUGE supply we have.

You can't say "There's this thing in the world, so obviously God wants us to use it." God also made marijuana and poisonous mushrooms, but that doesn't mean we're supposed to consume them. NotreDame
Because every bit we get rid of, we hurt the environment. Not necessarily. There are plenty of "clean coal power" technologies that can eliminate most/all of the pollutants. I'd be concerned about older plants and I'd also be concerned about certain mining techniques, but if we wanted to burn coal there are clean ways to do it. NotreDame
http://e360.yale.edu/feature/the_myth_of_clean_coal/2014/ Sorry bro, but I don't consider C02 to be a pollutant. Obviously that's because I'm a completely brainwashed, egotistical, stupid republican libertarian, but that's still the way I feel.
NotreDame
From the outside looking in, I'd say clean burning coal is an easy hurdle. The bigger question I'd have is wrt coal mining itself.

I don't know what being either egotistical or a libertarian has to do with it. Plenty of libertarians and egoists are willing to engage with reality. I guess it is if, as your last post suggests, you consider the single biggest problem with using coal as a fuel to not be a problem. "Hey, I don't consider lung cancer or emphysema unhealthy. It should be pretty easy to develop a healthy cigarette!"

NotreDame
Yeah. The coal industry helped Robert Byrd out a lot and used that influence to get him to protect them in the legislature. Sorry. But unlike some here, and based on your sad attempt at using this as a retort I guess that 'some' includes you, I'm not a party hack. Robert Byrd spent most of his legislative career carrying water for the coal industry and that was a bad thing. he did a bad thing. Now, were you going to approach this topic. With intellectual integrity you could have just pointed that fact out. Rather than use his associations with the Klan, associations he renounced decades before his death, to distract from the debate in an attempted cheap shot. Your sad attempt is all the sadder by your apparent lack of any sense of how ironic your attack is given your profile picture of a man who supported and justified Jim Crow throughout the institutions existence, never renounced the substance of his support (only writing a pseudo apology which completely misconstrued his original position to make himself seem like less of a racist, and then carried water for an awful racist like Ronald Reagan for the remainder of his sad life. Not really. I just find the reflexive Hackery obnoxious. You had a perfectly legitimate point. That Democrates in energy industry and/or conservative state often vote about the same as Republicans generally do. But instead you make the same shitakke mushrooms and predictable sort of point that somebody like Socrates or Sean Hannity would make. Given that I work in an industry where I'm surrounded by thoughtless spin constantly I find it incredibly grating when it creeps into other facets if my life. I don't think you've 'set me off' at all here. Of course I you can 'respond honesty.' I might disagree with you and tell you so. Or you might call me a sad, reflexive hack, then complain about your workplace. Since nobody is paying attention to this thread anymore except you and me, I'd rather you just enjoy your sunday without risk of being "grated" again.
