Spiritual Directors, Part 2

I've heard a lot of talk about spiritual directors, especially in this forum. So, I'm left asking, what in the world [i]is[/i] a spiritual director, anyway? Is it unheard of for teens to have them? Do you think it's a necessary thing? What is the point of having one? Would it be particularly useful to have one if you were contemplating a religious vocation? Would it be wise to choose a person, a priest for example, whom you know well and trust, or should you pick someone that you don't already have a friendship with? Would it be stressful or conflicting to the current friendship to add that extra dimension to the relationship?

Spiritual Direction is a very helpful experience, especially for those who are thinking about Religious life or priesthood. I have several directees and I am seeking an extended degree in this particular field.

The purpose of direction is to be able to explore your relationship with God with a spiritual guide or companion. Articulating our experience of God helps us to pinpoint where we are and where we are going. Some directors are more directive, in the sense that they talk a lot and give you assignments. Others listen attentively and reflect back to you what they see going on while having an ear to Heaven, so to speak. Regardless, it is all working toward the same goal.

It is alright to pick a director that you know. I don't see a problem with that, but you want to pick some one who will shoot you straight and be honest with you, not someone who will just wink at your weaknesses.
