the171
What are books that have really changed your life? (obvi the bible) For me I would say A Thousand Splendid Suns and Fire at the Triangle Factory (for some reason I loved that book as a child and it sparked my love for reading). arfink
I thought the Tripod series was good enough to make me a sci-fi fan. Although looking back it's rather schlocky. :P I loved Fr. Elijah, even if apocalyptic literature is a rather crowded genre. One of my favorite non-fiction books (which is really more like 2 moderately long essays translated from German into English) was Josef Pieper's book "Leisure, the Basis of Culture." Fascinating, and started my love affair with Thomism and philosophy.

OnlySunshine
Island of the Blue Dolphins was my favorite book growing up. I read it only once but I remember it vividly. When I was in 6th grade, the librarian would read us a few chapters of Letters from Rifka every week. That book really opened my eyes to the horror of the Holocaust. I also had to read Diary of Anne Frank in junior high. We watched the movie, too, but nothing compared to the book.
