Wisdom Teeth Surgery

My baby teeth were as stubborn as I am, so a lot of them had to be taken out by the dentist. I was never knocked out, believe it or not. They would just numb my gums, get this medieval clampy thing of doom, put it on the selected tooth (Or, on occasion, teeth), and pulled, so I'm no stranger to such surgeries. Of course, unless the wisdom teeth are already in, getting them out beforehand is different, but it's the same principal: Huge gaping bloody hole in your mouth, inability to eat due to how numb you are, and, of course, the constant temptation to feel said hole with your tongue. :P

I never had a lot of problems with it, but I second the syringe. I never had to use anything else but a straw for drinking and spoon for eating, and I was always completely back to normal by that night, but obviously, not everyone can be as fabulous lucky as I am.

Have you tried yo.gurt? Greek yo.gurt was my best friend when I had my teeth out.

Edited because of yogurt...

Hmmm I don't believe my mother has one of those. Maybe I should just call the doctor tomorrow and demand (i.e. request politely but firmly) a syringe.

I think depending on how your teeth came out you may not need one.

With mine there were small holes I had to stick the syringe to get the gunch out, but they failed to tell me that when I was there. So at my follow up two weeks later the hygienist popped open all four holes (which had filled with blood) and then they all got infected. Great fun. So, I would play it safe and get a syringe... and ask them to be wicked specific about cleaning your mouth.

What sort of narcs did you get eh?

hydrocodone but I'm not using it. I'm just double-teaming tylenol with advil and it's doing the trick. 600 mg advil, 1000 mg tylenol every 5 hours.

Yeah, maybe, i dunno...I got all 4 out and the bottom two needed to be dug out because they hadn't surfaced yet. I will call tomorrow.

I actually woke up for about 5 seconds during the surgery! I wasn't concerned though, and I couldn't feel anything or hear anything. I remember putting up 4 fingers though, and in my mind I was asking them if they got all four of them...but nobody gave me a response.... :( I also had dreams about the Grand Canyon and a swirling pink blob.

I'm surprised that he didn't give you one.  Do you have a straw, though?

Yes I found a straw and I mixed some salt and water in a cup and put my finger on the end of the straw to keep some inside and dropped it onto my incision sites. Thanks! I'm still gonna call and ask about a syringe.

Edited because of a prepared food made from milk curdled by the action of cultures...

Yogzurt is a great idea!

oof, just be careful about the tylenol. The max is 3000mg a day and its rough on your liver.

Thanks CrossCut, I will be careful. I have had 2000mg so far and will have one more dose before bedtime so I'll be right at the limit. I think my liver is okay, I'm not a heavy drinker. But I do appreciate the warning! :)

Right now I'm focusing on keeping the fashion-wonder ice pack on for as long as possible. My friend just brought me a pint of ice cream and I ate the whole thing with no shame. I'm not gonna brush my teeth tonight though, as a precaution to not mess up the stitches.

Is it okay for me to gently swish some mouth wash around?

From the website I linked earlier:

No rinsing of any kind should be performed until the day following surgery. You can brush your teeth the night of surgery but rinse gently. The day after surgery you should begin rinsing at least 5-6 times a day especially after eating with a cup of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of salt.

Glad the straw worked out.

I guess there's no point in my posting, since I have no experience with wisdom teeth. But I do have a question. How old were those of you whose wisdom teeth have come in when they came in?

My brother's molars were like that. They moved aside, broke in half, etc. But they didn't all come straight out.

And I had a friend who went to orchestra rehearsal the day after he had his wisdom teeth out. He didn't take his violin, though. It was kind of crazy, since I'm pretty sure he took longer to heal because of that.

I'm 22 but I think they started coming in when I was 21. I sat next to an oral surgeon on the airplane a few days ago and we chatted and he said some kids get them as early as 16.

I think mine started coming in when I was 18ish. My dentist would have let me keep mine since they came in straight and I had room. However one had started to move forward and push on my other teeth (not fun). So they decided to take them out.

Another fun fact is not everyone has wisdom teeth. I had all four but my sister has none. I think my grandmother only had one or two!

What worked for me was crushing up the medicine and mixing it with a small amount of a chocolate milkshake to cover up the bitterness, and it was much easier to take it that way. Mine wouldn't stop bleeding for a long time too and I did have to use the teabag trick, which isn't that bad. just be careful of using lukewarm water and not hot water, that way you won't burn yourself.

The soup that I ate was egg drop soup, which is slightly thicker than regular soup, but still light enough to not upset my stomach. It was the miracle soup for me.

My oral surgeon didn't give me my syringe until my follow up appointment about two days after the surgery. There is when he showed me how to do it properly with a special syringe and taught me how to make the cleaning fluid. Maybe you could call them and see about that option, or if you do have a follow up make sure to ask. My doctor also recommended that I brush my teeth VERY gently, mostly the front and middle teeth, with a very small amount of toothpaste so that it was easier to rinse later on. That helped a lot with the cleanliness thing.

Hope it gets better!

I got my teeth out when I was sixteen. They weren't coming through yet but they hurt all the time and the X-rays showed there was no room in my mouth for them.
