NotreDame
Feeling better? You are probably out of it, so I did some googling for you: https://www.google.com/#q=trouble+swallowing+after+dentist+because+of+numbness Lots of good articles, but this one here had specific advice: Note: The anesthetic makes your mouth and throat areas numb. Although the soft tissues surrounding these areas are numb, the muscles involved in swallowing still work. After eating and trying to swallow pills, if you find it impossible to swallow, simply rest for a while (30 minutes or so) and try again. If you are still not successful, try opening up the capsules, mashing up the pills, and placing them on top of 1 spoonful of ice cream or pudding, and swallow. For some reason, creamy things are sometimes easier to swallow than water and pills. Good luck! Keep in mind that no matter what, you're probably going to drool, so have plenty of napkins around and a grubby shirt on.
CrossCuT
Try taking your meds in the mirror if you cant feel your lips. It may help!

Advice? I've never had my wisdom teeth but my sister had hers and had to have them removed. It's important to keep putting ice on it to reduce the swelling so your stitches don't pop out. Someone I worked with had this happen to them and their wounds got infected so it affected their recovery. From a website: A certain amount of bleeding is to be expected following surgery. Slight bleeding, oozing, or redness in the saliva is not uncommon. Excessive bleeding may be controlled by first rinsing or wiping any old clots from your mouth, then placing a gauze pad over the area and biting firmly for thirty minutes. Repeat if necessary. If bleeding continues, bite on a moistened tea bag for thirty minutes. The tannic acid in the tea bag helps to form a clot by contracting bleeding vessels. To minimize further bleeding, do not become excited, sit upright, and avoid exercise. If bleeding does not subside, call for further instructions. http://www.paoms.com/oral-surgery-instructions/wisdom-tooth-removal.html
TheresaThoma
Applesauce is your best friend. Cold applesauce. That was the best thing I found after I had my wisdom teeth out. It is moist which counteracts the drying from the surgery and the cold feels good too. Its also better than soup because it is more solid and less likely to dribble with numb lips and tongue. Basilisa Marie
Oh, dear, I had a similar experience when I got my teeth out. It took me a few extra days to clot, so if you take a long time, don't worry, some people are just like that. :) Try putting a spoon in your mouth as far back as you can without triggering your gag reflex, and pour soup into the back of your mouth/down your throat that way. It might take some practice, but the numbing stuff shouldn't last more than a few hours so you won't have to do it for long.
Comingback
When I had mine done, I found it easier to swallow cold stuff for some reason.
AnneLine
Cold stuff is good. My dentist suggested..... cheesecake! cold, soft, filled with protein!
ToJesusMyHeart
My surgery was at 9am and now it's 6:30pm and i'm still numb and bleeding slightly. Thankfully I discovered that even though I can't feel my mouth, I can swallow somehow so my meds are being taken. I might have to try that teabag trick if bleeding continues tomorrow. The worst part, in my opinion, is that my mommy isn't here to care for me and I'm basically on my own. The doctor also did not give me a syringe of any kind to rinse out my wounds....? So how do I keep them clean?

So how do I keep them clean? You've got a lot going on. I'm sorry! :( If you've got a straw, maybe you can retain some saline in that and then squirt it over your wounds? Turkey baster? Flavor injector? Time to get creative! Edited January 8, 2014 by MaterMisericordiae

OnlySunshine
Oh dear, time to go research the cooking utensils you named! :hehe2: The flavor injector looks like a syringe but is used to inject broth and marinades into meat. Turkey baster is easy. ;)
ToJesusMyHeart
Hmmm I don't believe my mother has one of those. Maybe I should just call the doctor tomorrow and demand (i.e. request politely but firmly) a syringe.
