CrossCuT
I hardly remember what the other seasons were about...umm lets talk season 1?
I think the first season was one of the best. I think one of the big things that interested me was its own personal narrative on the change of time and the beginning of a new era where the large, wealthy, servant run lifestyles were beginning to die out. There are some little things that I always found humorous...like when Maggie Smith's character comments on the electric lights and how they are hurting her eyes. Just little things like that I can appreciate! It was cool to me to witness how people dealt with (whether their reactions were factual or not) the changing of an era and the entrance of electricity as it was starting to become a norm. I think the Titanic time stamp at the very beginning was also nice and how they used that to mold together the plot for the season. As far as individual characters go, Lord Grandthom was pretty cool, I didnt really have much of an opinion of him. He sort of took a back seat in my mind compared to some of the other characters. Lady Grandthom was cute although in the beginning, I had such a hard time distinguishing her accent. She is an american actress but the way she spoke was so odd to me! Did anyone else feel that way? Mary. One word: [bleep]. She was a very stuck up, entitled, snob. I didnt like her much but sure her character was suppose to come off that way in order to create some fan entangling drama with Matthew (her seeming opposite). Matthew is great. I have always enjoyed Matthew. Edith in the first season was just as snobby as Mary but in a very whiny way. She was constantly feeling bad for herself and taking it out on Mary. The jealousy she had for her older sister really was the main thing she seemed to focus on and she blamed Mary for anything bad that happened to her. Sibil was my absolute favorite. They had to give us a nice looking, moderately important, female character to latch onto since the first two werent good options in my opinion. Sibil embodied (to me) everything the world was working towards in that time. She was new, fresh, and curious about everything! She was not opposed to change and in fact she embraced it. She was very free spirited and just a fun character to have on the show. Violet (Maggie Smith) is also hilarious. She might seem on the surface like a very snobby lady who is completely stuck in this aristocracy sort of lifestyle, but she has some fun tricks up her sleeve. While she does do and say some pretty stuffy things, there are quite a few times where she is the confidant when things go wrong or dont go according to how their lifestyle dictates. Lady Crawley is another one of my favorites. She is very similar to Sibil's character. She is an ahead-of-her-time female role and its fun to see her clash with the Granthoms. Another thing I quite enjoyed was that half of the show centered around the employees in the house! The cooks, the butlers, the footman, the ladies maids etc. I really liked that aspect! There are lots of other things I could say but Ill just leave it at that for now and wait for everyone else to chime in. :)
Edited January 8, 2014 by CrossCuT
