Ancilla Domini
It's a little difficult to learn how to blow through the reed properly, especially the wooden reeds because they are more rigid (they are better in terms of sound, too). Since I have asthma, I had to use the beginner reeds throughout my time in band since I could not force enough air through the better ones. I also had a hard plastic oboe which is a beginner instrument though I played on a rented wooden one that my band instructor gave me. Since I was first chair captain all 3 years, he wanted me to learn how to play better should I continue on and play in high school and college. That didn't happen, unfortunately. I will admit that I did not like the clarinet, either. My favorite instrument is the flute and the oboe fingerings are easier (like the flute's) than the clarinet. The clarinet is such a common instrument and oboe players get MUCH more opportunities for college scholarships if you continue. Symphonies ALWAYS need excellent oboe players because they are kind of rare. The only problem is that oboes cannot be used in marching bands in high school. I would have been forced to play the mallets which wouldn't have worked because I don't do well with percussion. How often do you have to change the reeds? I've been wondering...is it a regular thing? Or is just every month or two? And do you know how to make your own reeds?
OnlySunshine
One of these days, I'm going to learn how to play the violin. Ever since I heard Mairead from Celtic Woman play (though she plays the fiddle), I've wanted to learn. One of my favorite songs by Celine Dion includes a violin bridge by Taro Hakese and I get tears in my eyes everytime I listen to it because it's so pretty. The bridge starts around 4:54. OnlySunshine
Another song that makes me want to learn the violin/fiddle:

And do you know how to make your own reeds? It depends. Most of the time, I could go for a few months because I would buy two or three reeds and then use them interchangeably to prevent wear. Sometimes, however, they'd crack and split due to heavy use. I don't know how to make my own reeds because reeds aren't easy to make. I usually bought mine from an instrument shop. the171
I mean, I'm a singer. Different genres. I'm a big fan of folk, alt folk, and bluegrass. I also sing classically (I'm not trained).
LinaSt.Cecilia2772
Cecilia is my Confirmation Saint, whoop whoop! I play clarinet and bass clarinet for solos and wind ensembles, as well as chamber ensembles. I also play tenor sax for jazz. I sing as well, but only in chapel choirs and praise and worship bands. Currently I really want to learn how to play guitar, to pick up piano again, and HOPEFULLY learn the violin or some string instrument. This is my favorite piece that I played in high school band. It's a short symphony for wind ensemble, and I played the bass clarinet part. It's quite challenging technically and in dynamics, but it's a piece that can give you chills if it's played right. Love when music does that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1teQlhzag8 Edited January 29, 2014 by LinaSt.Cecilia2772
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Haha, I can sing classical and pop, but rock is unfortunately something my voice has no capabilities of doing. My voice is crystal clear, and there's no hardness to it in order to properly sing rock. Jujst combine them, mix classical and pop vocals + rock music just for fun and see what happens, it isnt really consequential, unless you beco0me famous, than you have to hope you got yo christ side on tha ride. Be the best FP you can be, if your all 3 go for it, mix it up mashed pumpkin, potato and peas, with a dash of tobassco sauce. :) The tobassco sauce could be me occasionally busting a rhyme. Edited January 29, 2014 by Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Spem in alium
I can play a little on guitar. I sing as well (generally a contralto) and like being in choirs. I like folk and soul music most of all.

PhuturePriest
Congratulations! I would personally be very nervous, but that's because I can't read music. :P
cartermia
I went last year to the middle school clinic there and it was great. I do not have as much experience as other schools in KY since most start band around 5th grade and I started on the clarinet in the middle of 7th grade, so I am always nervous when I go to these things since I usually do not have as many years playing. The good thing though is I didn't have to learn sheet music to play the clarinet since I knew it from the piano, so that gave me an extra "year".
