CatherineM
Ten years of vocal training. 5 years trombone. I used to play guitar and mandolin in a progressive blue grass band until I hurt my left hand. Now I just play for myself. I'm also starting to learn to play an Irish bodhran. OnlySunshine
Come April, I'll have played the violin for 13 years. How many other musicians are there on Phatmass? St. Cecilia, pray for us! – Cilla I have played the oboe in junior high for 3 years (first chair captain all three) and then 2 years subsequently (on and off) in private lessons. I no longer own the oboe I had (wish I never sold it, though!). I received a beautiful Jupiter beginner flute on Christmas 2011 and love it! It was actually the instrument I wanted to play in band but we couldn't afford to rent or buy one so my aunt/godmother gave me my cousin's old oboe from her closet. We had it refurbished with new pads and corks and it was good as new. It was a Bundy plastic oboe. Which reminds me, I need to start practicing my flute more often! I got out of the habit of practicing every day because I need some new sheet music. I taught myself to play since the key fingerings are pretty much the same as the oboe. ;) I've also sang since I was little. My voice is in the mezzo-soprano range which means I can sing mid-soprano to mid-alto. I took voice lessons a few years ago and my voice instructor was envious of my voice because I was able to do songs that she could not. CatherineM
I started as a high soprano. After a throat injury, I'm now a contralto, but can reach mezzo fairly easily when warmed up.
Deus te Amat
eleven and a half years of flute, some piano, some guitar. I sing okay -- an alto with a good ear for following.
i<3franciscans
I have a classically trained voice and I have played piano and guitar for a number of years. :) Music is a slight obsession
cartermia
I have played the piano for 7 years, clarinet for two and a half years, percussion for 8 months (it was getting to easy for me), and I have sung for 10 years. My grandmother just offered to teach me how to play the organ and I may be getting a vocal coach.
littlesister
Piano forever. Organ for most of it. Trombone through high school (that wasn't my idea, but I called it "Junior" and made lifellong friends with Junior that I never would have had without him). Some Irish accordian when one is available. Second-rate alto where singing is concerned. Edited January 22, 2014 by littlesister
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Play FP singing and FP playing the guitar at the same time. Sounds cool. You could become a blend, hard rock and soft metal, hard rock music with a soft metal voice. Very good.

Haha, I can sing classical and pop, but rock is unfortunately something my voice has no capabilities of doing. My voice is crystal clear, and there's no hardness to it in order to properly sing rock. God the Father
I recorded a demo EP last summer but Universal records didn't pick it up. No justice.

TheresaThoma
I played flute and oboe (I loved the oboe). I can play a little bit of piano. I also sing, alto.
cartermia
Is the oboe hard to play? My school has one and they have been needing an oboe, and I have been wanting to switch to a different instrument since I have grown not to like the clarinet as well as I thought I would. OnlySunshine
Is the oboe hard to play? My school has one and they have been needing an oboe, and I have been wanting to switch to a different instrument since I have grown not to like the clarinet as well as I thought I would. It's a little difficult to learn how to blow through the reed properly, especially the wooden reeds because they are more rigid (they are better in terms of sound, too). Since I have asthma, I had to use the beginner reeds throughout my time in band since I could not force enough air through the better ones. I also had a hard plastic oboe which is a beginner instrument though I played on a rented wooden one that my band instructor gave me. Since I was first chair captain all 3 years, he wanted me to learn how to play better should I continue on and play in high school and college. That didn't happen, unfortunately. I will admit that I did not like the clarinet, either. My favorite instrument is the flute and the oboe fingerings are easier (like the flute's) than the clarinet. The clarinet is such a common instrument and oboe players get MUCH more opportunities for college scholarships if you continue. Symphonies ALWAYS need excellent oboe players because they are kind of rare. The only problem is that oboes cannot be used in marching bands in high school. I would have been forced to play the mallets which wouldn't have worked because I don't do well with percussion.
