Help With Answers To Catholic Questions

Hi Pham,

Our street evangelization teams run into all kinds of questions about the Catholic faith when we are evangelizing, but some are more common than others. We are coming up with 250 word (1-minute) answers to common questions people ask about the faith and we will post them online for everyone to benefit from. These are not meant to be comprehensive or answer all possible parts of the argument, but offer somewhere to start.

Below are the ones we haven't tackled yet - it is a labor of love, we are writing a ton of them but we want to recruit more help in getting the project done. If you would like to take one, go for it! We are trying to come up with answers that start with a place of common ground. For instance, if someone says "Catholics don't know the Bible!" we can start by saying "You know what, you're right, too many Catholics don't know enough about that Bible! Isn't it sad that more people don't read the Bible, both Christians and non-Chrsitians?"

Here is an example:

I love Jesus, not religion.

It is awesome that you love Jesus, because I love Him too and He is the reason I am here. Religion can be a very confusing issue, because there are so many “religious” followers of Christ that don’t act as if they love Jesus or are loved by Him. It is also hard to discern which religion, if any, is true. However, St. Paul, in 1 Tim 3:16, identifies Jesus as the mystery of “our religion”, so St. Paul is saying there was a religion that had Jesus as it’s focus and, in addition, that those who embrace the power of that religion of Jesus will be lovers of God, humble, concerned about the consequences of their actions, trustworthy, lovers of the good, gentle, truthful, merciful, compassionate, grateful, and peaceful people (2 Tim 3:5).

The Catholic religion is the ONLY Christian religion in St. Paul’s time. Jesus established the Catholic Church (Matt. 16:18) so that we can become all of these things St. Paul speaks of. It is through the Sacraments of His Church that He gives us the maximum amount of help we need to become lovers of God. Our Sunday services, which we call Mass, exist to worship Jesus and learn from His Holy Word. The reason I am Catholic and out here speaking to you is because I want to bring the world into deep intimate relationship with Jesus through the reception of the Eucharist, which is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. In that moment I receive Communion I am in union with God. We see this in John 6:51-58 most explicitly when Jesus over and over again “he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life”.
