Hand Sanitizer After Peace?

Here is something that defends what Crosscut is saying...

Facts about Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizers, Superbugs and Germ Resistance: Interview with GOJO Research Fellow and Microbiologist Dave Macinga, Ph.D.

Q. Does using alcohol-based hand sanitizers create “super germs” (germs resistant to anti-bacterials)?

A. No, this is a misperception. Using alcohol-based hand sanitizer does not create super bugs or contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria, as the overuse of antibiotics does. The active ingredient in most hand sanitizers is ethyl alcohol which acts in a completely different manner than antibiotics. Alcohol kills germs within seconds by physically destroying the cell membrane and denaturing proteins within the bacteria. Because of the rapidness of the killing and the physical nature by which it acts, there is no mechanism by which the germs can become resistant to it. Furthermore, because alcohol evaporates from the hands within seconds the bacteria are never exposed to low levels of alcohol so there is no opportunity for adaptation to it. According to the National Institutes of Health, the best strategy for combating the spread of drug-resistant bacteria is for everyone to keep their hands clean.

You didn't read my link... again! :p

It was actually about the flu shot and narcolepsy, not autism. I really just posted it to drive ya' nuts. Still interesting, if true perhaps this particular flu shot can also double as a treatment for insomnia.

I did read it! :saint2:

Did you read my link? The graph is bogus and its trying to call attention to correlation vs causation. :)

We use hand sanitizer, sometimes at Mass, particularly during the winter months. My children and I catch colds extremely easily, and it's much more prevalent when I'm pregnant. It's miserable being pregnant and having to take care of two sick toddlers while sick yourself. SO, we use hand sanitizer to help cut down on germs when I know I've touched someone who is sick, or something that the sick person has touched.

Yes, people touch door handles and hymnals and such. You don't want to live in a bubble; it's been discussed that this is not good for immunity for regular people. But people cough directly INTO their hands, and they blow their noses and get snot DIRECTLY onto their hands, and it's often shortly before they turn around to shake yours during the Sign of Peace. So if I can cut do a tiny little part to try and cut down on catching colds, I'll do it. The hand sanitizer is discreetly hidden in the diaper bag and if we DO use it during Mass (usually it's afterwards) it's always very discreet. Tossing hand sanitizer around and chatting about it during the Mass isn't very appropriate, but I think that's kind of obvious.

Everyone has their own "comfort level" when it comes to germs. Obviously, extremes should be avoided: you don't want to be a germophobe, but you also want to be sure to consistently practice basic hygiene. The stuff in between is personal preference. I don't think you should be offended if someone uses hand sanitizer in a situation where you, personally, wouldn't. As good ol' Abe Lincoln said, "We should be too big to take offense and too noble to give it."

What do you think about the line of Extraordinary Ministers of Communion passing around the bottle of hand sanitizer before they distribute the body and blood? This happens at a local parish near me and it always seems out of place to me.

I feel like as long as they wash their hands before they hand out Christ that they would be fine. And if they get sick then they can forgo their duties for a day until they getting better so as to not spread sickness.

I dont think the use of hand santizier during mass is disrespectful or even worthy of this whole thread unless someone does it in an irreverent or disruptive manner.

That's what I was talking about in my parish before my new pastor came along.  I did not like it at all.  I'm so glad he did away with it.

I totally agree.

Personally, I tend to appreciate the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion cleaning their hands before distributing Holy Communion. I think it's best done discreetly, and a little goes a long way (meaning you don't have to douse your hands in the stuff), but I personally have no problem at all whatsoever with the practice. If a parish wants to do it, great. If not, great. It doesn't bother me either way.

TheLordsSouljah

My violin teacher told me in Japan they all simply bow to each other at the sign of peace. Perhaps should be adopted by germaphobes??

At college, most of us do not care too much for it, we pretty much make eye-contact and nod our heads to each other, hehe! :P
