Mary?

where in the Bible does it say to pray to Mary, the mother of God?
Sure, she was special, God chose her to be the mother of Christ. I never found a verse, though, that says we can't communicate directly to God through prayer, so instead go pray to Mary. I'm just not seein' it. The gospels are all about Jesus and the rest of the new testiment is about peter, paul, and the rest of 'em spreading the news of Christ's death and ressurection and building a personal relationship with Him, settin' a prime example, and so on and so forth. Once you get past the Gospels, Mary isn't mentioned as far as I know.

Good question. In the Gospel of St. John, at the famous Wedding at Cana scene, we find Mary approaching Jesus and saying, "They have no wine." It's not by some sort of magical locution that Mary heard that the wedding party was out of wine (an extremely embarassing predicament in those days); one of the members of the party had to have approached her, thinking she could do something about it - and she did. You know the story from there.

A good analogy for the whole "praying to Mary" thing is kinda like a king/queen mother sort of thing. If I wanted something back in medieval times, there would be no problem with my going to the king to seek his help. As a citizen of his nation, I had the right to speak with him when I needed his assistance. However, if I really wanted to get in touch with the king, I'd go to the Queen Mother - there's just something about getting a guy's mom to ask him to do stuff that makes him want to do it. Without getting into theological arguments, this is the best analogy I can think of off of the top of my head. Hope this helps.

Yours,
Pio Nono
