but not for birth control, especially a single person who is chaste? What if we are in a military branch and would like to not have our periods so we take birth control pills? Is that permissable or not?

As long as it is not for contraceptive purposes, and is okay with your doctor. Normally it would need to be for medical reasons, and not for convenience. However, if you are talking about service in a war zone or a long time in the field in service of your country, I think that could be for a grave enough reason. Still, it wouldn't hurt to run it past your confessor.
