On facebook someone posted that The Advocate (a gay rights magazine) named Pope Francis as their person of the year...

I just.....what? How does that make sense? I think the photoshoped image of Pope Francis where they superimposed a "NO H8" on his cheek was the last friggin straw. Seriously, did they do any research at all?

Pope Francis is not for Gay marriage and never will be.  The photoshop is unacceptable.

However, many gay people are treated like dirt and he's made that clear it's not ok.  In some respects its good to let them be excited and then realize he's about kindeness and will not extend them marriage.  People are drawn to Francis, and I think it will be enough to change their beliefs in the end.

I don't know about that.  Just read through the comments under the article to see how much hatred and vitriol is being spewed on there.  One thing that many posters are saying is that while Pope Francis has emphasized a kinder approach toward the gay community, he hasn't changed any doctrine/dogma.  I'm just glad that they recognize that.  They're still angry of course but at least they're not deluded into thinking that the Catholic Church might soon change positions on such an issue.  I'm more concerned with the Catholic community who might be confused about this.  To lukewarm or non-practicing Catholics, this is something that they could be easily swayed by.

I think that it's great that Pope Francis is approaching the gay community with more gentleness and love than many Christians but still standing firm on the Church's teachings.  Really, I don't think there is any other way.  And I am equally disgusted by the photoshopped image.

Its a photoshopped image.  If a lukewarm Catholic can't figure out photoshop, I doubt they are listening to Doctrinial matters.  Its repulsive, but there is no turning back now.  As far as common vitrol...its probaly one or two people trolling and spewing.  People read comments to be assured that they are in the majority and psycologists have found that if something is seen as verifyed or believed by 5 different sources it is considered "fact" in the animilistic part of our brains.  Chances are "real life" people are not as bad.

My point is that Francis has a very warm and encoruaging message about inclusion and caring that it seems 90% of Catholics who DO take their faith seriously miss.  "Real life" people are loving the Pope and excited about Catholocism for the first time ever.  Its a wonderful thing.  People's beliefs are shaped by celebrities, so why not by Francis?
