Christmas Gift Ideas For Priests

That's a cute idea!

I did make a slight adjustment to a baseball cap and give it to our local priest a few years ago.   He LOVES gardening,

Found him an Oakland Raider's baseball cap, and I carefully removed the oakland logo (clipped the embroidery threads), leaving the motto intact.

It was a black cap, with the motto:   "Real Men Wear Black"

hehehe

I find that men tend to wear things until they fall apart, weither it is prudent or not.  My father, fiancee, brothers, and male friends are this way.  I have a cousin who is not and my fiancee's brother in law "manscapes" so he's a bit more aware but they all can do things that have me totally scratching my head.  A big one is wallets.  One friend of mine has a wallet that is heald together by staples and tape but won't get a new one beucase "it works".  My friend's (little brother who's my age) has socks that look like swiss cheese.  My brothers wear undies until they are threadbare.  Other unspecified men in my life wear shoes until they are so deformed and a bit smelly you need a hasmat lisence to dispose of them.  I know priests who are much the same, compounded when they live together and reinforce this behavior.  Except for the priest this is never a monetary concern (as in too poor to do so) but a practical one...shopping is a nusance that should be avoided until a clothing catastrophy.  Unfortunatly, even after said event they don't learn.

*sigh*

This reminds me of the thread about sterotypes about men.  I do wish they were a little less sterotypical about such matters.

As you said this, I looked at my wallet. It's torn, cracked, and ripped. BUT, it still holds everything it needs to hold. The only time I've ever changed wallets were if it were stolen or if a new one was given as a gift.

For men, it's much more a practical matter regardless of the circumstances. Why change something if it still works? Especially if it is an internal item (wallet, socks, undergarments, etc...) that aren't seen and simply need to function. And, when they stop functioning, that is why God gave us duct tape.

On the theological side, this is simply proof that it is not good for man to be alone (Gen. 2:18). Otherwise, all of our clothing would eventually just be made of duct tape.

Gift cards are helpful, maybe to a coffee joint. Most priests have to get up early almost every day and sometimes stay up late based on their schedules. A cup of coffee can make all the difference sometimes.

My wallet is literally hanging on by a thread. The pouch where I have all my cards has been surviving this way for years. I'm not sure when or where I got this wallet, but it is a faithful friend and I will mourn his death...but not for many years to come.

You could get him SUNY Adirondack sweats. They are 25% off right now. :P

Super comfy under an alb...

What a great idea!  :hehe2:

Also, don't forget the possibility of simply giving cash, with a note to use as he needs.

If he's a diocean priest, yes, thats nice, but a religious priest would be required to turn it over to his superiours.

From the responses of some of the guys in here, maybe a wallet is a good idea? lol He's bound to need a new one eventually, if not years ago. :P And you could slip some cash or a gift card in there if you want, as a surprise for when he fully opens it later on.

It may still be ok ... because in the long run the priest benefits as well (since the community is required to provide for his needs).

Yes, but I think most people would feel very "jipped".  I know a young family who wanted to buy a new sweater for a nun but there were several nuns who needed new clothing far more and when they approached the sister as to why she wasn't wearing the sweater she told them the truth, that her sweater while very used was far from the worst.

The family was heartbroken as they had no money to buy another sweater and the mother in particular was very resentful that her gift was not used as intended.  It wasn't until the youngest, about 8, spotted an old very petiet nun in a sweater much, much too big for her. (would of fit the sister they inteded it for).  The little boy (who was a very big 8yo) laughed at the sight and said that his sweater would fit the old nun much better and proceeded to remove his and give it to the woman, where she took it off.  The family expected her to give it to the the nun the intended but she gentally explained that there was another nun who also needed a sweater.

They ended up speaking to many friends and family and forgo any gifts to outfit all the nuns.  Of about 150 nuns it turns out that even their threadbare sister was about 1/3 the way on the list meaning about 50 nuns needed a new sweater more than she did.

I'm not saying this to scare dissuade people from giving money but to indicate that small gestures to religious who are of an order may not reach the intended at all....even with a trickle down affect.

Possibly some Mystic Monk coffee?

I'd be in favor of something nice (preferably tasty) that would get used up. AnneLine suggested food above, which sounds nice.
