I laughed till I cried.  I have a 90 pound Labrador and he will act just that way.  I don't have stairs, but he will jump straight up in the air if a cat puffs up at him.

Not The Philosopher

There was a time when we had both a large tabby cat and a small yorkshire terrier. The opposite would generally happen: dog would yap unceasingly at the (larger) cat until he smacked her a few times on the head, which would scare her away for a little bit. Rinse and repeat.

Man those cats have those dogs well trained.

We had an english springer spaniel when I was little and boy did he respect our cat. All it took was a couple of whacks on his nose with her (declawed) paw when he was a puppy to teach him she was the boss. On the weekends the cat got canned food (instead of kibble) and he also loved it but he would sit there and wait for her to finish. He would only go and lick up the scraps when she was done and we gave the ok. It was really funny because he easily could have pushed her out of the way but didn't!
