I was with Gerhard Schroder....although i may not always see eye to eye with JP on matters of economic reasons ( i think it has to do with me being North American) i am very happy that i regard authority....and with that Especially Church authority.

Wait until my brother gets home, I'll have him write out a summary.

Yeah, I'd be interested to read that too. I'm not a huge Gandhi fan, but still ... I'm interested. :)
Hmm, never got that vibe about the human nature thing. If that's the defining bit, then I'm not a hippie.

I've always seen it as more a measure of someone's social justice sensitivities. I mean, I care about people in poverty, and I care about equal justice, and I care about environmental stewardship. But, I have a mistrust of authority. I promise I'm working on it -- I wanna be like JP2!!
Well, I guess it depends on what stripe of hippie you are...most of the ones I know are really naive, seem to talk big, and do little.

This is not to disparage "hippie" types who actually DO good stuff. I totally respect those people. And not that I get up and do all that much. :(

I guess I get impatient with people who protest (whatever the topic might be) but don't offer any solution, let alone a remotely realistic, consequences-thought-out one. That's why my father wasn't a hippie for very long; it bothered him that they never actually *did* anything. ;)

Not to start some crazy political discussion. I just am totally unused to thinking of myself in these terms.

The funny thing is, I don't have a problem with authority. I'm always a tad skeptical about how authority is *used*, but authority itself I have no problem with. I try to stay clear-eyed and yet obedient to the authorities God has placed over me.

Of course, the thing about that compass is that probably 1/3 of the questions were phrased unsatisfactorily for me. I kept wanting to insert "sometimes", "might", and "depending on the circumstances". ;)

I guess I see too many shades of grey. Real life is messy.

The funny thing is, I don't think that's very accurate because I don't think it's a large enough test to see where you are. I mean, I might feel extremely more passionate about one issue over another, but it only allows two degrees of feeling in either direction on any of the listed issues.

yeah, I think that's true. It wasn't quite sensitive enough ... and there were some things that I would have been "neutral" on if I could've been.

And MG, I'd say I agree with you on the authority thing ... it's more a skepticism/cynicism about the (mis)use of authority. (I am a reporter, after all. It's my job to question authority and keep them accountable!).

Oh, I was just kidding!

It's only because I don't think it asks enough questions and the questions it does ask are biased or loaded (i.e. "I think sex outside of marriage is usually immoral" and "Abortion, except to save the mother, should always be illegal"). If they want a good test, they should state the polar absolutes and give us a good range of ability to agree or disagree. They should also include more questions. I mean, the reason I came up so conservative is because I don't believe abortion is right at all, I'm against homosexual activity, I think corporations are not intrinsically bad, but could do better, but that the government has very little right to get involved in it, that welfare should be all but aboloished in favor of tax incentives for those who donate to charities they like (tax privatization), and that drugs should be illegal. But this scale doesn't really encompass all political ideals. I've actually seen one with three dimensions and it works much better.
