Basilisa Marie
So discussion begins at the end of February? Edit: Additionally, the first trailer for the movie came out today. It does a pretty good job of summarizing the book, without any real big plot-twisty-ruining spoilers, for anyone who isn't sure what the book is about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ItBvH5J6ss Edited January 29, 2014 by Basilisa Marie
AnneLine
Idunno... I had thought earlier, but it should start when people have had a chance to read the book. Mine won't ARRIVE until Saturday. IceNine, when do you want the book discussion to start?

I've yet to read the book yet, but I've been a huge fan of the Vlog Brothers for a really long time, so I'm just a big fan of anything John Green does, really. :P

xTrishaxLynnx
I'm almost done the book. I have to say there's some, err... questionable... material in it. It's brief, not really graphic, and fairly obvious in the lead up to it so it could be avoided, but it isn't a book I'd give to my fifteen-year-old sister. Just a heads up. It never really phases me unless it's super descriptive and graphic. As far as I'm aware, it's not like that, though, so I'm not worried about it. Other people are a lot more stingy on that kind of stuff, though.

I just want to make sure nobody thinks it's worse than it actually is so they don't change the book of the month. The book does say they have sex, but it's not like 50 Shades of Grey or anything. :P
AnneLine
Book is here! :bounce: :bible: :bounce: I will avert my eyes if necessary ;) BUT I'm glad you did give us the hint, Tricia, because it could be a surprise to someone if not prepared... and I had wondered from seeing the trailer above.... My general feeling regarding uh... questionable material ... is that if it is appropriate to the story line and handled well, it can be appropriate in a book for older YA readers and adults. (I get grumpy when I feel that scenes are added merely to sell books.... a big issue with MANY adult books last 20 years or so.... if it is integral to the story, it's part of the story; if 'graphic' stuff is in there as a trophy for the writer, shame on the writer. My 2 cents.) And I haven't read yet, so I dunno!!!! But I know what I will be doing for part of this weekend!!!!!!! Hot coffee and a book!!!!!! Wheeee! :eat: :bible: :eat: (Please... WE NEED A COFFEE EMOTICON!)

The book does say they have sex, but it's not like 50 Shades of Grey or anything. :P It says a bit more than that, but I see your point; no, it certainly isn't anything like what I've heard 50 Shades of Grey is, but that's not really a good gauge against which to compare the appropriateness of young adult novels, either. Also, that wasn't the only part that was questionable. Honestly, when I listened to the preview of it on Audible I almost said something then because that alone made it seem like maybe it wasn't the best choice for a book club involving young members. I realized, though, that I may be a bit overcautious with this sort of thing and figured I'd leave it up to the parents of the younger members to keep tabs on what their kids are reading and it isn't for me to judge what's appropriate, particularly for people I don't really know. ChristinaTherese
I'm not exactly in your category of young members, Tricia, but I appreciate the heads up.

D: In other news, I recognized the song playing in the background. "We're on our way" by Radical Face (Ben Cooper). He also wrote this little gem that became quite popular a few years back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8a4iiOnzsc I really love his music and recommend anyone to check it out. :) Idunno... I don't know, maybe . . . somewhere around the 20th? I think that would give people a chance to read it and enough time to discuss before moving onto March, if indeed people want to read another book. Basilisa Marie
A couple things - I feel like reading about something is somehow different than watching it in a movie. It's a young adult book, and when I read it I considered it PG-13. Parents always have the right and responsibility to monitor what their kids read, but I don't think the content was inappropriate for most high schoolers, which is what I consider YA lit to be generally geared toward anyway. John Green has said that the reason why he included that "scene" was to underscore the idea that even disabled or ill people are still sexual beings. Does he succeed in sending that message and/or did he do it in the right way? That'd be an interesting discussion. I didn't find it to be truly explicit, but maybe others do. John Green studied to be a Christian minister for a while. He spent some time as a chaplain at a hospital I think (non-denom, if I recall correctly). He's not a minister anymore, and I'm not sure what his current religious views are, but he definitely reminds me of how many of my non-denominational Christian friends act and see the world, in a lot of ways. I think this plays a role in the way he portrays religion (and religious questions!) in the book. Anywho. I can't wait until y'all finish! :)
