MorphRC
The only time I use the word heretic, is in tracts when I dont have the time to state every single denomination that goes against a catholic rule of faith. I dont have the time, to say "All non-catholics, excluding Orthodox, and certain coptic Churches' everytime.
IcePrincessKRS
BUMP Can one of the Open Mic mods move this thread to the Debate Table? I'd like to pin it in there. Thanks!
William Putnam
I know that many phatmassers are loving people who want to build bridges and stay true to the Catholic faith. However, there are those who persist in being uncharitable by callling all non-Catholics heretics. It is true that the foundation on which they are built is of a heretical split, but those who have been brought up in those groups to do not have the formal knowledge of the Catholic Faith. Therefore they cannot reject the fullness of the faith if they have never been taught it. So, please refrain from using that terminology. It burns bridges and it does nothing to bring them into the Church, which is the goal. I love you all. Please pass this information to those that need it. I can't catch it all. Have a great weekend. Fr. Pontifex
I'm new here, father, but you are sooooo right! I am recently a poster at CARM Catholic Forum: http://new.carmforums.org/dc/dcboard.php?a...opics&forum=107 Which is no doubt, the most active conference in the universe! I recently refrained from posting there for a while, it getting way too hot and heavy, so for the good of my own soul, I come to "quieter places." Please note that another priest is active in the internet, and in CARM, it is "TP." If you happen to post there, tell him I sent you! Nah, I don't encourage it really, as again, it get's to be a bit uncharitable there (even while father TP is the calming voice we all admire there...) God bless, PAX Bill+†+ [i]Christus Vincit! Cam42
Thanks Father, we need that from time to time. Could you elaborate on Formal Heresy and Material Heresy? I have posted what it is on another thread, but I think that your viewpoint would be a good one as well.... Cam42

FutureSoror
I came across this bible verse and thought of this thread. 1 Peter 3:15 Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence. HS_Dad
Thanks Father.... This is one convert from Evangelicalism who had to struggle a lot with what I took to be "triumphalist" prideful attitudes of Catholics that didn't seem very Christian to me... You're definitely helpful in the "healing" department!!
KnightoftheImmaculate1
I have a question Fr. Pontifex, In another forum I spoke of "the evils of Protestantism," I guess that was not specific enough for some and thus it caused some problems. What I meant in saying this was that what Luther started is evil in that it brings separation among Christians. In no way does that call Protestants evil, is this not true? I was addressing those who purposely mean to teach against the Church after leaving its Truth, not those who are raised in a Protestant family and do not know the Truth. Please help me out. hyperdulia again
Why did the Church refer to Protestants as heretics well into the last century? Is Protestantism a heresy? If it is, how are people who hold it not heretics?
MichaelFilo
They are, but the term being flung around doens't come across so clear, and it causes conflict to occur since you are degrading them. They are material heretics, but it's wrong to acknowledge tehm as so if you hope to ever get them to listen to you. It maybe true but we don't always go around saying things that are true, for instance, I don't go around sayin gI breathe air, or I fiction is created when I walk, etc. Thank you Father, I: have a real problem with this at times, thank you FS for the verse. God bless, Mikey
