Catholic Introverts

"I’m an introvert. I’m not shy, I just like books, quiet get-togethers and lots of alone time. I do not like too much noise, attention and worst of all: small talk. [...] Anyway, on a somewhat related note, to amuse myself I recently compiled a list of possible signs of a Catholic introvert.

Check the symptoms. If six or more apply to you, chances are you’re a Catholic introvert too."

I hate when people sit near me during Mass. And I hate being surrounded at Mass. You think you've chosen the perfect row where there won't be too many people, then 2 minutes before Mass starts a family of 6 sits in the row in front of you.

Not The Philosopher

Indeed, the EF fits my personality like a glove. Any mingling afterwards will inevitably be awkward, though.

I love my solitude. I love to read, love small gatherings, and definitely don't care for noise and attention. But I'm also really, really good at small talk so I don't mind it much. And I also work in a place where a lot of eyes are on me 8 hours of my work day. But that I don't mind much because I love what I do and I'm pretty confident. My job requires a lot of public speaking, all my college years zapped that fear though lol.

Or when you get to Mass 10 minutes before it starts, all the pews are pretty empty, you pick a seat at the end of the pew, and before you know it someone shows up and you have to politely move over. Sometimes I'll stand up and get out of the pew for them or just shift my knees over for them to get by (I'm tiny enough) but that can be just awkward. I like sitting at the end because of a better view.

After Mass, I like to stay and pray with my head down for a good 5-8 minutes. I like to greet people (sometimes) and be greeted after Mass but i'm not great with conversation.

When you attend a parish where newcomers are asked to stand up and introduce themselves, or Happy Birthday is sung at the end of Mass, you mentally check the church off your list of possible places to attend Mass.

Oh my gosh, glad to know I'm not alone....  What about places that all hold hands, even across the aisles for the Our Father?  Or maybe some people are like me and they start tensing up at the end of the Lord's Prayer because they know the dreaded sign of peace is coming?

My parish holds hands during the Our Father, across aisles. I don't. They glare at me, but I don't care. Holding hands disrupts my prayer. For the sign of peace I only shake the hands of those to my right, left, and in front of me. It's not supposed to be a big production where you reach across four other people to shake the hand of the stranger on the other side of the pew.

It's worse when there's plenty of room but they sit DIRECTLY BEHIND YOU, so their hands bump into your back when they're kneeling if you're sitting.

SPACE, people. PERSONAL SPACE.

Can you imagine if it was like those old school churches without pews?

Hey, I can think of one way to avoid all of that...
