exploring
I heard Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" on Power 98 in Charlotte yesterday. I went to iTunes to check it out a little closer and hear the explicit version. If you haven't heard the song, it's supposedly about his love for Jesus. He tells about the lack of raps about Jesus, the lack of Jesus rhymes on the radio, and the fact that if you rap about Jesus you might be somewhat "softer" than other rappers (my words). The explicit version is laced with profanity like all the other popular rap songs. The others songs on his album bring up topics and themes that are not in line with Christian virtues. I'm sure he even thanked "The Lord Jesus Christ" in his liner note props. First Question: Is this hypocrisy on the part of the rapper? Do they actually believe in Christ and live by his word and just rap about things that contradict their life? Or is the hypocrisy in that they do not live by Christ, but like to rap that they do? Next Question: Is this becoming heretical? Meaning: are these rappers and those influenced by these rhymes adhering to controversial opinions towards the Christian faith? Can you live your life with and by Christ while at the same time promoting a life of sin?

ilovechrist
Can you live your life with and by Christ while at the same time promoting a life of sin?
hey, another PMer from Charlotte! cool beans --i'm over in Asheville. unfortunately, many artists are trying to project a view that they're Christian, but at the same time.. their songs are becoming nastier. it's a BIG problem, and it's getting worse with each song. Guest
sup pham i saw a post like this earlier, i think damian posted it btw, wut up kid, wuts good homie i was quick to reply and say that i didnt like it at all ive sorta changed my view, kinda sorta.....i think its cool that the homie is reppen Jesus in one of his songs, but then at the same time, the song is about him pushen dope, so its kinda like wut the heck.......and then like the tree and its fruits, thats a real vital point that Jesus made, you cant have bad fruit and good fruit mixed together, its either one or the other, declare the tree healthy and its fruits good, or label it rotton, one or the other.......so its a tuff call, im not God so I guess i cant judge the homie.......but iF he feels the presence of Christ in his life, why in the world is he playen with his soul, and possibley leading the youth into confusion....And the liner notes doesnt thank Jesus Christ....He thanks God, no mention of Jesus......But Jesus is God, so hopefully Kanye is refering to the God that is God, and not the counterfit.......But i dunno, i was bobben my head to it the other day on the radio, so i dunno, i feel like a hipocrit so much of the time, sometimes i cant stand the secular rap, but then sometimes im listen'n to it......These are for sure the last days, confussion everywhere.....holla
flip
first of all, i think this song is dope. this "idea" also comes up on Andre 3000's album, Speakerboxxx - where he has a song called "Go to Church" or something like that. is this wrong for them to speak about Church or Jesus? I believe that they, as artists, speak of the thier true lives. Both these rappers obviously have a history with Christianity, and so they have chosen to write a song about it. I believe there is nothing wrong with that. Honestly, I wish most secular artists would have the guts to write about thier views/expierences with the Chruch... West and Andre speaks about how sinful they are in both of these songs... and come to think about it - i might be labled as a "Christian" rapper but I am SOOO SINFUL (aren't we all?). Are these people living and promoting a life in total submission to Christ? No. I think that they would say this as well. Can they write about Jesus if they want? Yes. I honetstly think that Christ does dwell in Secular rappers, howver they have not disconvered Him yet. That realtionship has not been cultivated yet. Maybe these "Jesus" songs were something these rappers had to do - in thier exploration of thier oun spirtuality and humaness. It is not for us to judge. It is for us to choose to or to choose not to listen to it. me, I will bump these tracks becasue they are hot and I relate to them... Dj 86
That song is fire!!!!!!!!!!! stop trippin. I agree with Flip 100% I'd rather hear "Jesus Walks" over "rubberbandman" 100 times a day on the radio. Kayne just looped the sample and added a real ill drum break underneath it...simple but very effective. Check out the original sample... Dj 86
I feel ya brother.....It's the music business "machine" Selling drugs, Rocking ice, and being a pimp = alot of record sales. I personally dont feel Kayne on the lyrical tip..and I'm not a twista fan...so I cant speak on them. Rappers talking about killing Christians is real weak though!!!!!!!! flip
dude... 86 is the dopest DJ around! also, my bad - it is big boi who has the Chruch song... not Andre... but yeah, remember: we are not saying that they are holy, Christian, or living for Christ... we are jsut saying that there is nothing wrong with them wriitng a song about Jesus. it does smell of elderberries that twista talks about killin Christians - but hey, love your enemy right? exploring
I hear you! The fact that they write songs about Jesus is fine, but it still sounds like a smack in the face to me. They're supposedly bringing Jesus to their fans, but on the same album no other song is inherently Christian. My problem isn't with one song, but all the songs as a collective by this artist. I'm not judging the artist, but his work of twisting the meaning of his work in such a way that seems to demean Christianity.
