So I'm going to Italy in a week (November 18-29), and decided to make a thread about it. I'll be handwriting notes throughout the trip, and obviously plenty of pictures. Obviously I'm getting coffee there (because I'm a coffee-freak/work at a coffeeshop). I'm going with a group from my area and rooming with two of my best friends. We're going to Rome, Orvieto, Norscia, Cascia, Siena, Assisi, La Verna, and Florence. I'm not sure I'll have internet access while there, although I'm bringing my electronics to put pictures on. If I can I'll try to do a few updates. When I return I'll try to upload a few pictures. God bless you all!

MI3, you have a wonderful time.  I bet you WILL have access there, because hey are very much interneted!

I had my very first cappuccino in Assisi, which somehow seems appropriate. ;)

I LOVED Assisi... MAKE the time to walk to San Damiano and spend time there....  trust me on this....

I'm crazy for Orvieto, Siena, and Assisi. Never been to Cascia or LaVerna.

Florence and Rome have great churches & great art, but I'm not crazy about the cities themselves.

I'm particularly excited about Siena, because Catherine is one of my patrons. I do wish we could make a leap over to the football and see St. Lucy's body and shrine in Syracuse, because she's my Confirmation saint. We can't do everything I guess though.

Good, I'm glad!
Yes, I'm super excited about cappuccinos because I work at a place which is into very purist cappuccinos and espresso drinks (i.e. NOT Starbucks/bigby/Caribou).
I think I'm going to San Damiano. At the very least there is a store next the hotel with about every size and style of crucifix (mostly Damiano) which I can get a replica at.

There's like at least one saint for every little town in Italy! :topsy: I had to tell myself that a lot too, can't see everything, or I would have spent so much money that there'd be no hope to ever go see the Holy Land too (still seeing about that) But yeah, I made a few little side trips to towns that were near where I was staying, like Citta di Castello near Assisi, to see St. Veronica Giuliani and Blessed Margaret of Castello. But then in Rome itself, you only have to walk to the next church on the block to visit another great saint :like:

Question, do you know if you'll have extra/free time in Florence? There's really a lot to see though, so I don't want to give you any extra suggestions if it'd be too much.

St. Therese kissed the floor of the Coliseum in honor of the martyrs who died there. It's in Story of a Soul. I forgot the first time I visited with the group, but got to make a short visit back on my own and made sure to do that. Didn't get sick :)

A lot of group trips actually don't go to San Damiano (first Poor Clare monastery where St. Clare lived and died) as it's a little outside the old city. Mine didn't, but I made sure to go there when I had free time. I didn't have enough time to walk to it, so I took a local taxi instead. It's very beautiful and so neat to see where she lived and died, but if you miss it, it won't be the end of the world. I found it most special just to pray before her body in the Basilica of St. Clare in town (not incorrupt anymore, but there's a wax figure of her).

The San Damiano crucifix itself that spoke to St. Francis (which used to be at the monastery of San Damiano) was transferred to the Basilica of St. Clare in town. So you will definitely be seeing that! :like:

side chapel at the Basilica of St. Clare (or Santa Chiara I should say, I like her original name in Italian! though I like Clare too) the Poor Clares (or Clarisse) are on the other side of the grille there :nun3:

The tarmac can be used as a general term for paved areas at the airport. :) I'm unable to use images from my cell phone but maybe someone could post an image of Blessed JP ll kissing the pavement...
