You were a Muslim? How did I miss this?

You may have been too busy issuing me warnings ;)
But yes, ahl sunnah wa'al jamat, and took bayat with Shaykh abd karim of the naksibendi tariqat. The latter remain among the most religious people I have met, may the Lord guide them. Sadly shaykh abd karim passed away about a year ago.

Interesting. Were you born into a Muslim family?

There was a man a few years ago from Egypt who converted to Catholicism (his name escapes me) from Islam and was baptized by Pope Benedict circa 2008. He ended up leaving the church recently because he felt the pope and the church had become too soft on Islam. It kind of reminded me of your "the church i read about and the church I saw" comment. Idk.

No, I converted to Islam and continued in for about five years. The fellow who embraced Catholicism and was baptized by Pope Benedict seemed to already be very Westernized. I thought to myself at the time that most Muslims probably wouldn't be too surprised at his leaving.
