Advice On Signing Up For Classes

Byzantine

Recommended Posts

It's that time of the semester, and I was hoping you guys could give me some advice.

First off, I'd like to take a class (Youth Ministry I) that isn't a requirement for my major, but it seems like it would be really good to have under my belt. Problem is, it's during the time I would usually go to Mass (difficult to go any other time of the day). Taking this class could be extremely useful, but I'm not sure I want to give up my Mass.

So what would you recommend? Thanks!

Not The Philosopher

I'm assuming you're talking about weekday Mass here and not Sunday (which would obviously be non-negotiable).

I'd ask yourself this: which choice would bring you closer to God? (well, obviously you can't get any closer to God than the Eucharist, but we also can't be spending time in Church to the point of it being a detriment to our duties and vocation) Would forgoing Mass on this day have an overall negative effect on your prayer life? etc.

See when the class is next on the schedule.  If it's offered frequently, then go to Mass.  If it won't fit into your schedule any other way than take the class.

If you are a traditional 4-year student you need to make sacrifices for your education and cut out extras, sometimes that means things like Daily Mass.  Traditional college is a gift, and you can never get it back once you graduate.  I took all the free elective classes I wanted and sometimes they made Daily Mass impossible.  Six years later, every ounce of knowlege I gained has helped me be a better person.

And becuase of that I have the job that I want which allows me to go to Mass when I like.  Had I given up those classes, I don't think I would have the means/clout to make my schedule work like it does.

I understand how difficult a decision this is. For me, Mass is not just about receiving Our Lord. It's a daily oasis without which I spiral quickly into major stress and freak-outs. I think the advice offered so far is good. Also ask yourself: Can you live without daily Mass? If not, forego it. If so...

Fixed. (How in the world did that happen?!)

With my current schedule of courses (Fall 2013), I am forced to miss daily Mass on MW and, sometimes, F (when our professor actually has class).  I'm a full-time student in Health Administration.  I have classes:

#1: 9-9:50 MWF

#2 10-11:40 MW

#3 1:30-2:45 MW

#4 6-8:45 Thursday nights

You have to learn to be flexible when it comes to taking classes because they aren't always going to be offered at the times you want them.  If this is a course you are really interested in, then it's worth the sacrifice, IMHO.

Also, check to see if your school has a daily Mass on campus or if any nearby hospitals have Mass during the day.  There is one hospital near me that has Mass at 12pm.  Of course, I'm usually not available at that time since I'm on the other side of town but it's nice to have it available.  UCLA - Westwood has daily Mass at various times throughout the week (mostly at 12:10pm) during the semester.  ;)

I hate having to make that decision. I'd go with curiousing's post above. I'm lucky that i don't have to make that decision when the weather's good and the sun rises at a decent time since I live in a city... but biking in cold, dark, foggy mornings without a very good headlight (I should buy a new one) and then walking under a bridge that homeless people sleep under (not right now, but they're doing construction)/cars drive by and I just hope my visibility isn't blocked by a parked car or something so that I can cross safely... yeah, I'm not at Mass every MWF. But it's wonderful to be able to, so I'd weigh if you can live without daily Mass on those days for an entire semester or maybe sacrifice a little and go at a different time, since you're at Franciscan and have a lot more options.
