tinytherese
As some of you may know, I'm leaving my parish because of the liturgical abuses and lack of orthodoxy. I've found the parish that I want to switch to. I was wondering though, what is the protocol for doing that? Do I need to talk to my parish secretary and fill out a form so that I'm no longer in their system and then fill out a registration form at the other parish or do I simply fill out the registration form at the new parish? Nihil Obstat
Strictly speaking you do not need to do anything. Registering at a parish is for the sake of their mailing lists, essentially. But if you think it is a good idea, typically just filling out the new parish's form should be fine. If you are still worried, calling your old parish's office will probably cover all the rest. Basilisa Marie
It's also good to register so that the parish can get a hold of your sacramental records in case you ever want to volunteer as a catechist or something.
CatherineM
I just started going elsewhere when I got tired of being locked out of mass.
Kateri89
You should let the current parish know you're switching. I switched awhile ago and still haven't told the old parish and they keep sending me the offering envelopes. I should tell them too...
Eowyn
Yeah, just contact the office of your old parish. I just did this - it was painless.

AnneLine
TT I am a member of a parish that is NOT my geographical parish. What we were told was that if you want to 'claim' a membership in a non-geographical parish, you can, but you need to register formally with the new parish. If you don't they are under no obligation to provide things like marriages, burials, baptisms, etc. for you as you are not technically 'theirs'. On the other hand, your geographical parish is required to do those things... but I guess if you 'renounce' them you give up your 'citizenship' there for lack of a better word. :) So just be sure you are on the books somewhere, because you never know when you will need to contact them for an emergency sick-call or whatever..... Blessings in your new parish!

Blessings in your new parish! Actually even registering outside your canonical parish has no canonical effect. It might have a sort of juridical effect in your diocese, if that is what the bishop has decided (possibly, though I doubt it), but the default is simply that your canonical parish is always your geographical parish and anything else is merely bookkeeping. I found all this stuff out when I was sorting out what I needed to get married outside of my canonical parish. I do happen to think it is kind of a dated system that will fade out over time. Lol. :P Edited October 29, 2013 by Nihil Obstat
cmaD2006
Actually most parishes around here require you to be registered at the parish for some amount of time (either 6 months or a year) for any sort of sacraments (Baptisms, Marriages, etc). This is regardless of whether or not you live in the area.
tinytherese
The new parish I'm going to is still in the city I live and is less than 10 minutes from my house. My former parish is also in the city I live and is less than 5 minutes from my house.
MargaretTeresa
I'm switching parishes simply because 1. I go to mass with a friend at a different parish and 2. I've been sucked into LifeTeen at said different parish. The joys of Louisiana.
