Mary+Immaculate<3
Kudos to my friend for sharing this:http://freedomoutpost.com/2013/08/monstrous-story-monstrous-curriculum-ugly-heart-common-core/ I realize some of the ideas and statements in here are obviously biased, but overall the article is informative and this issue should be addressed. Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
i like most of it and understand the womens concerns and it is most sad that the goverment says it is volutary but refuses funds to those states who don't accept it, this is not voluntary. But there is one word which is a terrible judgement that i don't like in the whole thing, and that is 'unforgivable.' I believe if either of these ladies where real and i understand this story is depicting a reality then if they truely repented before they died they would be forgiven, it doesn't excuse what they have done or make it any less horrid, shouldn't we also be teaching our children how to forgive without condoning such sins. But also i really like how this lady has said that literacy leads to freedom, i don't believe it is the whole but it is a big part, i have never heard this said before, i am a better man now for reading this. Thankyou. Edited October 28, 2013 by Tab'le De'Bah-Rye

Mary+Immaculate<3
Yeah, there's a video called "Obama's Common Core" that Michael Voris and ChurchMilitantTV made. It's like 6 minutes and worth a watch.

Lilllabettt
the common core is in theory a good idea. a lot of good teachers have always taught whats in the common core. the problem is its enmeshed with other ideas from the people who are trying to force non-profit education into conformity with for-profit buisness models. Also it is not what the founding fathers intended. The state should control education. The fact that the Gates' donated millions of dollars just seems against the whole country's principles. Lilllabettt
well, the founding fathers also intended black people to count as 3/5ths of a person for representation purposes. so appealing to their judgment doesn't settle the question for me in the least. My take is this: whatever happened to basic math, science, reading, and history? If you want to set national standards, simply state that every high school graduate should be able to perform a simple integration, diagram a sentence, and know what is in the Constitution. Lilllabettt
every high school graduate should be able to perform a simple integration, diagram a sentence, and know what is in the Constitution. the thing is, education is not about learning what is basic or necessary. Good education operates on the razor edge of mastery- constantly stretching students beyond what they are capable of without shooting so far above them that they shut down. What you describe could easily be achieved with most neurotypical students by 6th grade. Contrary to popular opinion, American schools are among the best in the world. Controlled for race , income and disability, they are #1. One important reason for American global dominance is the fact that our top 10% can compete with and often beat everyone else's top 10%. there is a large gap between the top 10% and the rest of the country, and that is what the Common Core is supposed to address. If students in Massachusetts are developmentally capable of doing x, students in Oklahoma should be capable of it too. It makes sense but they skip over what caused the gap to begin with. Oklahoma is a much poorer state than Massachusetts.
Mary+Immaculate<3
My take is this: whatever happened to basic math, science, reading, and history? If you want to set national standards, simply state that every high school graduate should be able to perform a simple integration, diagram a sentence, and know what is in the Constitution. If I had it *my* way, Classical education would prevail, causing students to address hard questions like the schools of philosophy did. The only problem is that in our society philosophy is more of an optional subject and not very many jobs can be had with such a degree. The problems of suicide, abortion, depression, I think, would diminish because when people have an examined life they have something to live for. If the education is simply rudimentary education, there is a materialistic end to it, namely: getting a good education to get a good job to make money. Of course, this is a building block of civilization, but it should not be the meaning of life. Anyhow, I digress from this thread.
