Byzantine
Is there a verse somewhere in the Bible to the effect of "compete with one another in growing in holiness?" Thanks!
Anastasia13
I'm reminded of when I was looking for the parable of the virgins where some burnt all their oil and got eaten by wolves and some saved oil and survived. I was having a conversation about planning ahead with one friend online and someone else said he didn't remember a that parable either, but then a month later I found it. beatitude
That verse rings a bell with me. It's from one of Paul's letters, I think. Edited to add: is this it? Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. It's Romans 12:9-13. Fr. Antony Maria OSB
This reminds me of Chapter 72 in the Rule of St. Benedict, The Good Zeal of Monks: Just as there is a wicked zeal of bitterness which separates from God and leads to hell, so there is a good zeal which separates from evil and leads to God and everlasting life. This, then, is the good zeal which monks must foster with fervent love: They should each try to be the first to show respect to the other (Rom. 12:10), supporting with the greatest patience one another's weaknesses of body or behavior, and earnestly competing in obedience to one another. No one is to pursue what he judges better for himself, but instead, what he judges better for someone else. To their fellow monks they show the pure love of brothers; to God, loving fear; to their abbot, unfeigned and humble love. Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may he bring us all together to everlasting life. So from Scripture, Romans 12, as Beatitude already pointed out :)
