Comingback
And its for people like you that really benefit from herd immunity. Granted in the specific case of the flu that vaccine needs to be perfected in order to be more effective, however in the vast majority of other diseases we have an obligation not just as human beings, but as Catholics to take care of the poor and weak. Vaccination is a very simple thing we can do to help not only ourselves but the people around us. Yep, and I am very glad that a lot of people feel that way!!! Tony
I haven;t gotten the flu in years, but no I haven't gotten the flu shot either. I've heard people say they didn't get the flu.. until they got the flu shot. So I really don't feel like chancing it

CrossCuT
Don't like needles. :ohno: This is a fear a lot of people have which is why they are develoiping new technology to help get around that. They have come out with the "mist" vaccines as well as micro needles that are pain free. http://news.discovery.com/tech/ouchless-needles-flu-vaccine.htm I haven;t gotten the flu in years, but no I haven't gotten the flu shot either. TheresaThoma
I used to not get it but I take public transit now and I think on my campus there are 52,000 people on campus on any given day so my chance of getting the flu is pretty high. My mom works with 1 year olds and the flu already hit one of my co-workers really hard. She is 70 and had to be on oxygen for a while because of it. I really don't want to spread it around since I am relatively close to two at risk populations. My university gives free flu shots to students so I am planning on going next week when they have a clinic for it.
Gabriela
Has anyone ever thought that maybe the reason the flu is so dangerous these days is because we keep overmedicating ourselves so our immune systems are weak little babies and our viruses are mutating superheros? Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
My father lost most of his family to the Spanish Flu in 1918. We were always first in line every year. I'd never forgive myself if I got sick and passed the flu to someone who was immune compromised and killed them. If there is one thing to aspire to be perfect in i think being perfect in forgiveness is an admirable pursuit. :) Forgiveness heals many a gaping wound, sometimes needing major surgery which takes time. Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Overvaccination. And hand sanitizer. I heard thers a thing called the cult of the body, and there health extremists to the point where they think a dead human body is a health hazard and all dead human bodies should be burnt to ashes. How sad. And this is no buddhist pun but we have a choice rite and i know where allowed to get cremated as catholic christians just where not allowed to scatter the ashes :( Not saying that any of you are a part of that cult, but be careful. CrossCuT
What do you mean by nice things? Herd immunity for the compromised. (Or immunity of preventable diseases in children)
GregorMendel
Has anyone ever thought that maybe the reason the flu is so dangerous these days is because we keep overmedicating ourselves so our immune systems are weak little babies and our viruses are mutating superheros? That's not how the immune system works; it doesn't lose efficacy with over use, in fact just the opposite is true. When our body recognizes a foreign antigen, our primary cellular and humoral immune system components kick into gear, and while non-specific (google how awesome IgM is, plus it looks like a snowflake!), it does ready our body for encountering the antigen in a secondary exposure. By then, enough time has elapsed that your immune system has developed very specific mechanisms purely for that antigen. It's very important to remain up to date with your vaccination schedule, especially for something like influenza, not because of its symptoms (there have been some who posted about mild cases) though there are absolutely severe outcomes that can emerge; rather, it's very important because the virus itself is constantly changing (through genetic drift and shift) so there really is no practical way to extend your immunity from year to year because in some sense, its not the same virus. Herd immunity is only as good as the isolationist cul de sac you live in, assuming that you can guarantee that you won't come into contact with Anyone outside your community for 6 months. Modern vaccinations are very important, have very little risk associated with them for most people, and most importantly, they work.
