Just a reminder that its a good idea for everyone to get your flu shot!

Here is a motivational story for you.

EXETER, RI—After leaving multiple phone and email messages reminding her son Josh, 28, to schedule an appointment with his doctor for his seasonal flu shot, area mom Kathleen Warner broke into his apartment in the dead of night Sunday and administered the 2013 flu vaccine herself, sources reported. “I warned you,” the 58-year-old woman reportedly whispered to her son through a black ski mask as she flicked the tip of the needle, pumped the syringe two times, and jabbed it into his arm. “I told you to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. I even sent you a list of local flu clinics in your area. But you wouldn’t listen. Now we’re doing things my way.” Sources confirmed that after administering the vaccine and exiting her son’s room, Warner quickly tidied up the bathroom before slipping out the back door.

I won't get the flu shot.  It's still a 50/50 crabapple shoot.  That and I've had severely adverse reactions to other vaccines and the lovely doctors who think they know everything don't have a clue why.  So no shots for me unless absolutely necessary.

You are completely right about the chance of the flu shot not working. Due to the nature of the bug it can rapidly mutate and change the proteins on the outer membrane in order to mask itself again.

However there are some awesome advancements in preventing this from happening by redesigning the vaccine to act via an alternate mechanism.

I would discuss getting the flu shot with your doctor because the fact you were possibly allergic to one doesnt mean youre allergic to all of them. :)

But of course its better to be safe than sorry.

However there are millions of Americans who have compromised immune systems and simply cannot get vaccines as well as the fact that they are in danger of the flu itself as well as other diseases.

But of course, there is a difference between wont getting shots and cant getting shots.

Yes, but for those with normal immune systems, and even those without the complications of the shots, though rare, can be devastating.  If I was working around an immuno compromised situation, infants that aren't my own, people with disabilities, elderly, I would take the risk.

Still, I have a doctor friend (practicing rheumotoligist for over 30 years) who's done far more research than I have and believes that vaccines should be used at about half the rate they are.  My doctor (ironically, even 70 miles away) did a rotation under him and even though she specializes in paediatrics, she approaches annual vaccinations with some caution because of the other risks involved like Guillian Barre Sindrome which has exploded lately and has been tied to recent shots like HVP and Flu

I've never had a flu shot and I've only had mild cases of it thrice in my life.

Anyone who has ever had a bad case of the flu is extremely jealous of you right now.  :hehe2:

And it is very true that us young ones in our prime will not be as susceptible to the flu simply because our immune systems are amesome! However you can still be a carrier however unaffected.

Even if you dont personally gain much from getting the flu shot, you will be protecting others who dont have as strong of an immune system.

There are still thousands of flu related deaths (which vary depending on how severe the season) so we should do the simple things within our power to protect the weaker among us.

I use cold and flu tablets + lemsip + steam(with an oil)+cough syrup and throat lozenges if i have a sore throat . If i do this quickly after noticing the flu or cold symptoms, i still get sick but its length is reduced dramatically if i address the flu or cold without delay with these 3 things. All these cost under $30(australian) for a 3 day supply and usually if i get into it quickly and rest for the whole 3 days it is zapped withing those 3 days.

I like being knocked about sometimes, though i had a really bad sinus thing last year and i almost rung an ambulance late at night, i thought i was going to die but i decided to go and have something to eat and drink instead then fell asleep and it was almost gone the next day, i had it for about 48hours.

I have no doubt that your doctor and friend have the best interest of everyones health at heart but they are in disagreement with the majority of the scientific community.

It has been proven time and time again that the immune response that occurs from vaccines is harmless even to children.

Also, no vaccines have been shown (and in many cases disproven) that vaccines do NOT cause Downs Syndrome as well as Guillain-Barre which you have mentioned.

Guillain-Barre is an autoimmune disease that results in the attack of the bodys own nervous system. It can be triggered by a host of different things as well as the flu shot or ANY action that results in a strong immune response (ex. an infection).

If you are afraid that you may have this disease there are tests that can be run. If your results are negative then you can feel at ease with getting the flu shot.

That is one of the best things you can do during the flu season! :)

I like drinking a lot of green tea and taking my vitamin C everyday!

Also make sure you get enough sleep! That helps sooooooooooooooooooo much! I love sleep.

I've never had a flu shot in my life. I don't even know what the flu is.

You must live near the equator then perhaps. :)
