AccountDeleted
Why not look up the definition of the word and then try to fill in the blanks from that? You could also type the word into an MSWord document and then use the thesaurus for synonyms... It doesn't look that mind bending - it just takes a little research. Don't be lazy! :)
Lilllabettt
carnal selfish only resisted with God's help everyone can be tempted by it evil one tempts us with it prayer strengthens us against it everyone can be tempted by it ... sigh. I hate these silly assignments. What if she didn't have a computer or a thesaurus? Middle class kids are tortured by their teachers.

Also my father told me not to do the thesaurus/synonym way, that is what I was going to do... so did your father tell you to ask other people to do it for you? I don't see the value in that? What are you supposed to be learning anyway? At least using a dictionary, thesaurus, you would learn how to do research. But asking others to fill in the blanks for you? What does that teach you? I'm a teacher, so I'm a bit confused about this lesson, and your father's advice.
Lilllabettt
listen, there is no value in the assignment. It's supposed to take time. Maybe they will make a poster about it and "present" all about their word or something. when I was a kid I got these crazy weekly "puzzle" questions from my 5th grade science teacher. My mom would go with me to the library to help me find out the answers to these nutty questions. This was before the internet. We would spend hours and often actually cry over it. It cost my teacher nothing to assign, she probably had a book of puzzle questions and would just pick one randomly. Her whim was just plain torture for the kids. Lots of teachers don't think when they assign junk, especially teachers of middle class kids. So ... I think there is no shame in getting help from pm. It's a dumb assignment and if she can get through it without crying she's learned all she needs to.

Well, sure, that's one way to do it, but I still don't understand why it couldn't turn into a learning experience. There are a lot of 'dumb' things taught in school but turning them into learning experiences is one way to deal with the frustration. One of the most valuable things to learn these days is research - simply because there is so much information available online and learning to sort through what is relevant and what isn't, can be a valuable skill to learn. But of course, it is certainly much easier and quicker to ask others to do the work instead.

Lilllabettt
well ... meh. I think that was the point of my puzzle questions too. A "learning experience" meant to teach us how to "research." I mean, research was a valuable skill back before the internet. I'm sure that was the point. There was a point right??? Probably the point was not to spend every Sunday afternoon on the rack. Unless the teacher was a sadist. Hmmm... But anyway, as long as we are thinking of ways students can turn their teacher's dumb assignments into valuable learning experiences, how about learning to use your network to find pro-active solutions? (ahhh management speak) Good job accessing your online network carter

While we're at, let's teach 'em all how to plagiarize as well - that way they don't have to do any work!:)
