Halloween Costumes! The Best And The Worst...

I am trying to spark my creative imagination for a Halloween costume I can make.

I was thinking about being a nun since I have a long black dress and veil but then I thought about how that might be offensive. Any ideas people?

Also if you could post pictures of you in your worst/best Halloween costumes please, that would be awe.some!

If I had a dollar for every Catholic girlie I've seen dress as a nun for halloween, I'd go buy me a new Lamborghini. Or a Batmobile.

How about a Batmo-lambo?

But it's fun, at least for us. :D :nun2:

Agreed.  Being a nun for halloween is cliche/inappropriate.  For instance if I dressed up as a cop (In a convincing manner) it wouldn't be cool.  Nuns and priest costumes regardless intention are often taken as tasteless.  Maybe not a FUS though.  I think the whole thing has been ruined for me by my Nana's previous BF's inappropriate use of a priest costume.  I won't tell you about the details of my ex-convict coworker's priest costume.

I disagree. Those costumes can be inappropriate, but they need not be.

I understand why the guys roll their eyes at the nun costumes -- but they are beautiful and kind of fun... and many of the people who want to wear them want to be a sister or wish God had wanted them to be a sister.  Harmless...

However... and this is the sad thing... unless you are going to a totally Catholic gathering, probably better to leave those and the

priest/bishop/cardinal/pope costumes at home.  It isn't that there is anything wrong with the costumes... the problem is the effect on OUR society at this point.

I have an absolutely beautiful bishop's outfit that was made for a St. Nicholas celebration (Sinterklaas) when the Saint comes and opens the 'book of deeds' for the last year and looks at good and bad things for each member of the family and bestows appropriate gifts or a little reminder of what to do better next year.  (it's the nugget behind letters to Santa, by the way....)   So back in college, I made are really nice 'habit' for him, and he's acquired gifts of jewelry, a wide variety of headgear, crosses and rings over the years.  And I USED to loan it out to people I trusted for Halloween celebrations, as long as it was intended in a respectful way.  I wold loan it out to any of you in a second....

But generally, it doesn't come out of my closet too much.  Because.... other people turned it into a mockery.  Made it the excuse for sick jokes and comments.  I realized that while the costume and the intent behind it hadn't changed, for others, what they saw HAD changed.  For too many, they see something vile and filthy when they see those robes, especially in a context that often includes kids.  NOT wearing it iis part of our bigger Church's 'penance' for the sins of those who have worn those outfits unworthily... they become for too many a source of mockery and bad thoughts.

But... what can be done -- and can be a lot of fun! -- is to dress as a patron saint, just not tell anyone who you are (or only share it with those you want to share the secret with!   Friends and I have gone to costume parties dressed as Tudor lady and gentleman.... and no one needed ot know that what we REALLY were were two of the recusant Catholics passing along the message that there would be mass at a home at the other end of the villiage tomorrow at 6am!     And we prayed for each person we met!  It was fun... and it was the ULTIMATE trick and treat!

can't find the others.  :/

I love your V one!

Here we don't really celebrate Halloween - some people do trick-or-treat, but they're usually little kids dressed as witches or ghosts or something along those lines.

Though I did once dress up as the Scarlet Pimpernel, complete with my own little card bearing the flower. That was a lot of fun.

My mom wants us to dress up as a saint. I was going to be my Confirmation saint but then I thought a girl/women shouldn't dress up as Pope John Paul II. So I thought I will be a nun I was thinking St. Angela Merici (sp?)
