Where To Start?

Comingback

Recommended Posts

I came back to Catholicism in February.  I converted when I was in grad school, ummm....30 years ago. I went to a Protestant Div. School, where everything mainly started at the Reformation LOL, except for some wonderful courses in desert monasticism.  I am interested in theology and was wondering if you all could recommend books for somebody who is kind of new to Catholic theology.  I did not do RCIA (don't even know if it existed back then).  I talked with a Priest for about 6 months and then was accepted.  I am "reading around" in the Catechism and am getting some grounding, but could use some more help.  Thanks!!

Not The Philosopher

Welcome back!

On Being Catholic by Thomas Howard is a pretty decent book to wet your feet with.

If you want to, I'm sure that you could find a parish that would be glad to have you join their RCIA class just to learn more. That's what I'm doing now, because I didn't get very much instruction before I converted last year.

Guessing your education means you do not exactly need really beginner stuff. Perhaps Jesus of Nazareth and Spirit of the Liturgy by Pope Benedict.

I always recommend the Lighthouse Catholic Media resources. I read too much as it is. These I can listen to while I do other stuff, and they're kinda' "light". I mean, they're not super heavy theology, but they do—"when aggregated", so to speak—give you a really good feel for what the Church believes. See here: http://www.lighthousecatholicmedia.org/

Catherine Therese

Introduction to Theology by Frank Sheed.
I love the above suggestion of the Jesus of Nazareth books by the Pope Benedict XVI, too - they are an absolute treasure trove.

Welcome home! :dancer1: Know of my prayers for you... and I ask you please also to pray for me if you remember sometime!

Evangelical is Not Enough by him is also a great read.

You're vision problem you spoke of in the prayer room sounds a lot like the one I had.  Was it caused from head trauma?  You know concussions?  We had it fixed at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston.  People go there from all over the world.
