Crazy Fainting Experience

I woke up around 4:30 this morning with a terrible cramp in my right calve. It was so bad I couldn't even flex my foot, I mean I tried but it seemed "locked" if that makes sense. So I sit up and try to massage the muscle, then I swing my legs to the floor and get out of bed, I try to stretch it a bit. I put my night table lamp on, sit back on my bed, and just place the cramped leg on my bed to rest it. The pain subsides but I do feel I need to walk it off. And this isn't the first time I've gotten a cramp like this, by the way. So I get up and make my way to the bathroom. Now I'm starting to feel nauseous. Weird, right? After I flush the toilet the nausea was extremely bad, to the point where I paused by the sink and dry heaved. But nothing happened, so I'm trying to collect myself, I figure okay just go rest in bed until this passes, but I again get that urge to throw up. More dry heaving. Now as this is going on I feel like I can't see straight, like there's little spots all over my vision, but I'm not panicking or anything because I just went from a pretty dark room (minus the light I put on) to a bright bathroom.

Well the next thing I know I'm on my back in the hallway with my mom kneeling next to me, calling my name and saying that I fainted. I'm covered in sweat and white as a sheet. I was a little confused but no longer felt nauseous and my eye sight was back to normal. (I didn't hit anything or hurt myself when I fell either, thank goodness.) I've never fainted before, needles to say this was a very crazy, bizarre experience. I had a headache when I woke up at like 10 and then I went back to sleep until 1. I basically feel weak (yes I did eat a little something) and out of it. Area where I had the cramp is sore but okay. Saturday plans all cancelled for today, needless to say. I just don't know what caused this. I take two medications (for two different reasons) but I've been on one for 2 years and the other 8/9 months and have had zero problems. Again, I've had this type of leg cramp before and never felt nauseous or dizzy from it. My mom had a history of fainting when she was a teenager/early twenties but that only happened when she was menstruating (and that's not a factor for me right now).

Anyone else ever faint before, just so randomly???

Yup. In mass even. On more than one occasion. It's pretty weird. I didn't ever feel alarmed at all when it happened, just started having my vision change and then I wake up on the floor or something. I think it's happened maybe 3 times in my life.

I would go to the ER, even if you've had cramps like this before. Do you have someone who could take you?

I've had severe nauseous and dizzy spells before, but it was because of the medications I was on at the time.

I basically think it was a combination of having a really empty stomach (I didn't eat after 7 that night), maybe being dehydrated, and the leg pain. Right now I don't think it's an emergency situation but I am going to call my doctor Monday.

having a really empty stomach (I didn't eat after 7 that night), maybe being dehydrated,

This one time, I had a fever and hadn't eaten or drank anything most of the day. I spent a while curled up napping in a chair, and then stood up to go get some water and I passed right out as soon as I put the faucet on. You probably stood up too fast and your blood pressure was reduced from not eating or drinking and being sedentary while sleeping. I think you'll be fine. --G.t. Father, MD

I've blacked out so many times. I don't know why.... Sometimes, when I stand up I just have to lean against a wall because my vision is slowly going away and I know that if I don't have that support I could fall. A couple of times, I've fallen into the wall right next to the stairs (at night, in the dark, a few times too many and too close together), which was minorly terrifying because I could have fallen down the stairs if my position had been off by a few inches. (Thank you, Jesus.) My parents say that it's probably low blood pressure or something like that. It probably doesn't help that I don't like drinking much more than I think I have to.

ETA: I've never been as bad as you described though. Just blacking out, which has probably been going on since I was 11 or 12 or even younger.

How of those who have fainted take multivitamins?

I second water and food. I can get light headed with the right combination of asthma, dehydration, and low blood sugar.

I fainted once watching my brother have minor surgery. Sounds like how you described. Vision got bright and hazy, then I woke up on the floor. Not a bad experience at all, except I did hit my head on a couple things on the way down.

Excellent nap though. Never before or since have I had as peaceful a nap, short as it was.

Fainting aside, consistent cramping is a sign of a problem you should probably look into. Good luck with your doctor!
