4588686
I didn't assume anything about what you do. I'm suggesting you do as you please with the money you earn, and kindly mind your own business when it comes to mine. Since you dislike paying taxes so much how about you go move to a country that doesn't collect them.
r2Dtoo
You are such a sophist. The sad thing is that you aren't even getting paid for it. You just swallow the kool-aid for free. The Obama administration should have rejected any short term extension of the debt ceiling. The Republican Party keeps trying to threaten the stability of the global economy to get policies passed that cannot win on a national level. Floopy them. The Republicans won the House of Representatives. I thought that was on the national level. Silly me.

No. House members are elected in (often highly gerrymandered) local districts. They don't run national campaigns. http://constitutionus.com

It's a part of our national government, Hasan. Obama doesn't have the right to just ignore it completely because you don't like the results of it. The policies this faction of the House Republicans cannot win on a national level. They can't even win on enough state level races gain a full legislative consensus on their erratic behavior (plenty of Senate Republicans are trying to push the House away from this stupidity). The House has enough votes in it to pass a clean CR and the raise the debt ceiling. Boehner doesn't want to open the full House for a vote because he's bound himself by the Hastret rule and doesn't want to lose his Speakership. The fact that Boehner is a weak Speaker is on Boehner. The nation and the global economy should not be tormented because Boehner is too weak a Speaker to prevent a faction of his party from running off a cliff. Boehner needs to get his poo together. Open the House for a vote and put an end to this bullcrap once and for all.

The two men have to work together whether they want to or not and no amount of decrying the other as a weak leader accomplishes anything productive. The bottom line is somebody has to cave, and except to partisan ideologues it doesn't matter to anybody in the country who that is. The bottom line is somebody has to cave, and except to partisan ideologues it doesn't matter to anybody in the country who that is. It does matter. I really don't know how to spell this out to you. If House Republicans want to let a large portion of their faction vote against raising the debt ceiling then that is completely fine. But this tactic of actually using the debt ceiling has to stop. A faction of a nationally ulelectable faction cannot threaten the global economy to get their concessions. Because if this becomes the precedent then it will never stop. What happens when the Republicans purge these clowns, become a national party again, and the Democrats take back the House? Are a faction of the House Democrats going to threaten to crash the Global economy unless a Republican President and Senate agree to a faction of the democratic party's demand for single payer healthcare? This is absolutely illiberal and undemocratic and it has to stop and it has to be the faction of the House Republicans that looses. If not we might as well hang it up and accept the disintegration of our political system.

4588686
I work for the Democratic apparatus. I do not want this to be a tool available for the Democratic party, either. When we get a Republican President again I'm going to work really hard to stop him from implementing what I view to be bad policy. I would not support using the debt ceiling, except for symbolic votes, against him either. This is like nuclear disarmament. This needs to be taken off the table of acceptable negotiating tactics for both parties. It needs to end, now. It should have ended in 2011. Obama never should have negotiated over the debt ceiling back then. But he did. He bears responsibility for legitimatizing this tactic by engaging with it. But now he and Boehner need to put this genie back in the bottle. for that to happen this faction of the republican Party needs to lose here. 4588686
And I don't really care who wins or looses. I just want them to raise the beaver dam debt ceiling. Do you want it to become a question every six weeks whether or not the debt ceiling is going to be raised?
r2Dtoo
Do you want it to become a question every six weeks whether or not the debt ceiling is going to be raised? That's really not the point. The point it is the responsibility of both Obama and Boehner to find a better way to work out their differences than this. Obama has shown reluctance to comprise with the Republicans. This is now just as much his debacle as it is the Republicans. He will not compromise with an elected body of Congress who are representing their voters (though weakly) and the part of America that does not walk in lock step with the President. Those that do not want to be forced to buy a product just because the are alive. The dept limit is another example where D.C. believes it gets a pass from reality where the rest of us live. We would be arrested and thrown in prison. We could not continually spend massive amounts of more money than we raised. And our solution to that could not be to continually raised our debt limit when our debt was raised to high.
