Pope Francis Calls Extraordinary Synod on Family and Marriage

By Elizabeth Dias
Oct. 08, 2013

Pope Francis’ first Synod of the Bishops will be, quite literally, an “extraordinary” one. Today the Vatican announced that Pope Francis will host an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops to discuss the topic, “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.” The meeting will take place in Rome, October 5-14, 2014, and the issue of divorced and remarried Catholics will almost certainly be on the table.

There have only been two previous such Extraordinary Synods since Pope Paul VI established the Synod of Bishops in 1965. The Synod of Bishops is a general assembly gathering that was created as part of the Vatican II reforms, and regular (ie, non-extraordinary) synods meet every couple years. The synod’s role, Pope Paul VI said, is to examine  â€œthe signs of the times” and “to provide a deeper interpretation of divine designs and the constitution of the Catholic Church” in order to “foster the unity and cooperation of bishops around the world with the Holy See.”

From the article:  "Calling an Extraordinary Synod versus a regular Synod means that the issues are even more urgent. The participants are more select, and the heads of the Eastern Churches attend, as well as presidents of bishops conferences and heads of curia offices."

I am opposed to the Eastern Catholic bishops (and Churches) participating in Roman institutions (e.g., the Curia, the Synod of Bishops, and the College of Cardinals).

He's probably having the heads of Eastern Churches attend because he values their perspective.  Plus, since he seems to be trying to work on East-West relations, it's a move that supports his efforts there as well.

I'm interested to see what will come of it.

Each Eastern Catholic Church has its own Holy Synod, and so there is no reason why the bishops of the Eastern Churches should participate in the Roman Church's Synod of Bishops. If anything the action - from an Eastern Orthodox perspective - reveals that Rome still does not understand synodality correctly.

Yes, it will be. I think it will probably involve a re-reading of Catholic doctrine in the light of contemporary culture.

Nope.

I give it ten or twenty years before the Vatican caves in. The pastoral needs of contraceptive users can't be ignored forever.

Yeah. If there's one thing I've learned through my own spiritual journey, it's that the Church doesn't change its stance on much of anything. Especially when it comes things like contraception, abortion, gay marriage. And the ordination of women.

If people don't like the church stance on contraceptives or whatever, learn more about the church's stance and why that is, accept it and move on. Or find a religion which accepts your views. Just please don't call yourself a Catholic. Because you're not, really. You can't just pick and choose.

Well you're wrong my friend, apparently Roman Catholicism encompasses all sorts of diverse beliefs, and you will find many Catholics on here who support a formless Roman Catholicism.

I doubt anyone here would disagree besides you. I made my own thread earlier this year asking about these issues because I hold very different opinions than the church. I was pretty much told that I have to accept church teaching to be a faithful catholic.

My biggest issue is contraception. I even have good reasons to not want kids right now. But the church teaches it is wrong, I disagree, and so I'm not Catholic (there are obviously other things other than that). I love the church. Really. But I don't want to be a hypocrite so I don't call myself a Catholic.

I'm sure there will be off shoots of Roman Catholicism (modern ones). There are two types of Mormons. The FLDS and the LDS. the LDS is the Mormon church as we know it today and they don't consider FLDS to be true Mormons.

Church has been here a long time. They will not budge. Especially on issue involving the sanctity of human life. Ain't gonna happen.
