Vincent Vega
I've been asked to play for a memorial service for a young person who was killed. The family is Roman Catholic, and they just want (I guess essentially) prelude/postlude music -- they won't be singing it, I'll basically just be improvising on the tunes, so it's pretty important that they be recognizable. What I am asking of you is: what hymns/songs would you recognize/like to have/be meaningful to you at a memorial service? So far, I was thinking something along the lines of this list (in no order): -What Wondrous Love is This -Jerusalem, My Happy Home, -On Eagle's Wings -Amazing Grace -Here I Am, Lord -Be Thou my Vision -I Am the Bread of Life -Deep River -You are Near -Steal Away -Nearer, My God, to Thee -Taste and See Are there any others that you would add? It's probably not a huge deal if they don't recognize every single tune, but it would be nice if they could recognize many/most. Also, are there any big-time Latin American hymns that would be meaningful (that's what the individual was)? NB -- I'm not looking for chant stuff. I know that tradition well, but I don't think these people will. Thanks in advance. Edited October 8, 2013 by USAirwaysIHS
Apotheoun
So basically it is version of That 70s Show.
Vincent Vega
So basically it is version of That 70s Show. I don't really know what that means. It's not a liturgical function -- it's not even at a church. He was killed more than a year ago, so it's not a funeral or anything.

AnneLine
I will say a prayer for the young person and the family, USAirwaysIHS.... and for you as you work on the memorial. That is a beautiful thing you are doing.... spoken as someone who has worked as a bereavement counselor. A 'Memorial Service' could be almost like a funeral, complete with a Mass.... or a much simplier service more like a 'vigil' service. Some people might even want all or part of a rosary.... even if they don't go to Mass on a regular basis. And... sometimes God uses times like funerals and memorial services to touch people's hearts and bring them Home.... If the family is Latin American, they might appreciate a hymn to our Lady at some point. If you PM CMariaDiaz I bet she could give you some ideas, because she has been involved in music ministry in both the Spanish and English music ministries.... If I can help you with ideas on what to do, don't hesitate to PM me either...

Apotheoun
The King of Love My Shepherd Is That is a lovely 19th century hymn. I remember singing it back in the 1980s when I was High Church Episcopalian.
