zabbazooey
Zabba, I really like your avatar. (The IPA is wonderful, isn't it? (Said the linguistics major.)) Thanks! I'm taking a phonetics class this semester, and it's so fun to transcribe into IPA! :) Although I still have a hard time differentiating between "ah" (hot) and "aww" (caught) If I could be another major, it'd be linguistics! ChristinaTherese
If it helps, I'm really confused by the back vowels.... I think it has something to do with my phonemic vocabulary switching between languages and not entirely recognizing how, though. I'm really not sure. But I don't think that everyone's dialects even necessarily have that particular distinction above. At least, that's what we're being taught. ChristinaTherese
I found more information about that vowel distinction while studying. You can read about it and see a map of it here: http://www.ling.upenn.edu/phono_atlas/maps/Map1.html

TheresaThoma
I did a French Phonetics course last semester. The transcription part of it almost killed me. It really helped my pronunciation though. The professor focused on making our speaking sound more like a native speaker and less formal, that meant un-learning some of the stuff they taught us in lower level classes. TheresaThoma
This thread and the Calvinball thread are really helping my post counts (and I'm having fun with them!) I might be able to halve the time it takes for me to get there at this rate!

I would have LOVE a French Phonetics course :) Of course I am a nerd, so I like torturous classes like that lol! I think it's cool they were more focused on you sounding like a native speaker. Not knowing what YOUR 'IPA' is, I thought you were talking about IPA - India Pale Ale!!!! :havebeer: Edited October 10, 2013 by AnneLine
ChristinaTherese
By IPA, we meant the International Phonetic Alphabet.
TheresaThoma
The IPA is great, I just had difficulties with all the subtle nuances of each vowel. 97 days till I move!
