Cool Talk On Eastern Catholicism

I found this interesting in how it tried to explain the Eastern approach to the Western communion.

168 - Eastern Catholics - Are They “Orthodox”?

March 31, 2011

Length: 40:00

There are over 20 ancient Eastern Christian churches in communion with the Pope of Rome whose liturgies and "ethos" are more "Orthodox" than their Latin-Rite brothers. Some of them claim to be "Orthodox in communion with Rome". Some Orthodox disagree, calling them (pejoratively) "Uniates" or Eastern Rite Catholics, who have made significant compromises to come into such communion. In this episode host Kevin Allen speaks with Melkite (Eastern Catholic) priest Father James Babcock about the similarities and differences between Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholics and the Roman Catholic Church.

Who cares.

Sarcasm, right? Cause I have a feeling here people care about church unity, and being about Eastern Catholics, this has an inherent coolness. All of the cool people care about things that are cool, thus you obviously care about this. :)

In such coolness to care about the East, you are as wise as your name reference to Ecclesiastes, Dust. "All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust," but our time in between shall be spent in the service of the Lord.

Unity? I did not think that was high on the Eastern Catholic priority list, because just today a phatmass Eastern Catholic said this:

I am opposed to the Eastern Catholic bishops (and Churches) participating in Roman institutions (e.g., the Curia, the Synod of Bishops, and the College of Cardinals).

Maybe I am just a stupid man, but on the surface that appears to be the opposite of unity.

Actually I said that back on October 9th.

Not only am I opposed to Eastern bishops participating in Roman Church offices, I am also opposed to Roman Catholic bishops participating in the Melkite Holy Synod, or the administrative offices (i.e., the equivalent of the Roman Curia) of the Melkite Catholic Church. After all, the Roman Church, as a self-governing body, does not need Eastern Catholic bishops telling it what to do, or how to reform its internal structures any more than the Eastern Churches need Roman Catholic bishops doing that. What is the point of having 23 self-governing Churches if they are in fact not really self-governing.

The Roman Church's Synod of Bishops should be a Roman Catholic body. In other words, it should be like the Holy Synod of the Melkite Church, which governs the Church with the Melkite Patriarch. There is a name in Eastern ecclesiology for a synod that includes representatives of all the different self-governing Churches, and such a synod is called an Ecumenical Council. Is that really what Pope Francis is trying to convene? Perhaps Vatican III is a possibility after all.

This is actually incredibly logical, Apo. Unity within the self-governing church, unity in communion, unity in faith, respect for spirituality like there is respect for identity within a well-functioning family.

Your reporter said rome claims post 1st century but the council of jerusalem is pre 1st century, which is actually the year 48. Do all orthodox boys have to be circumcised to be christian? And if there are 20 eastern catholic rites, how many orthodox rites and or seperate churches are there?
