God the Father
He would let the country burn before he defunds his only economic achievement so far and the thing his legacy will be built on. I think "letting the country burn" would be a minor blemish on the legacy we agree he cherishes. LBJ successfully shackled the nation to a permament social justice program, and his reputation is far from pristine. If this Obamacare warmup emboldens the opposition in advance of the debt ceiling deadline, it's definitely worth it.
Isidore_of_Seville
Holy what tha' fa fa fa fa fonze?, Batman. There are some people on this thread who really know what they're talking about! King, I'm glad you want programs like WIC to be funded. I am sad that you think that not funding them is really no biggie. I am confused about that being is your stance because, well, it's a confusing stance. CrossCut, spot on, bravo, and I'm sorry about your loved ones being furloughed by this silly shutdown. Everyone, if you look at how the ACA works think about it as a Christian, you will see that it's pretty beaver dam amesome. It helps people in need, it helps us all care of the sick and the poor, it helps to prevent companies and individuals from taking advantage of each other, all while making people healthier and safer. The only problem is the HHS mandate. And don't get me wrong, it's a HUGE problem. The good news is that the HHS mandate is actually something that has a moral, logical and constitutional argument against it. We shouldn't be holding the rest of the country hostage until they give us what we want. We have a good argument, let's keep arguing. Let's not let tens of millions suffer (by not stopping the ACA or causing a gov't shutdown) because we're not getting our way right away. KOC, any media reports about numbers of people who are being affected by the shutdown is not fear mongering, it's just reporting. The worst media manipulation out there at the moment is the Fox News (the Tea Party broadcasting station) which has officially changed all of it's language from the actual correct term "government shutdown" to the completely made up term "government slimdown." I can already hear the arguments that folks like KOC will mount against this post. Rather than assume on their behalf, I'll let you present them yourselves and I will respond directly. Apotheoun
I think this highlights why many people were concerned with the Pope's statements. True. A good test for any papal statement on moral issues is: does Hasan like it? If he does, it is not a good statement. r2Dtoo
I'm gonna go on record as say'n I totally agree with Izzy, Obamacare is the biggest miracle since Jeebus rose from the dead. Why, just the other day I got a letter from my health insurance provider tell'n me that I am now covered for maternity care. Now, I'll admit, I'm just an ignit redneck and all, but my Momma always told me that my male loins weren't no good for give'n birth, but this here Obama fellow has done gone and changed all that! I can now be the first man ever in history to give birth. Sure, I'm pay'n twice as much just for that, but it's miracle y'all don't ya see? Men can give birth now! Get ready Labor and Delivery nurses, I'll be rolling in through them doors soon! Oh, I actually lied up there. Its not just maternity care I'm pay'n more for. I get Pap smears now too. Yee-haw! Socrates
I agree that Obama will do whatever it takes to maintain his legacy. That of most disastrous president in U.S. history? He's doing an excellent job of maintaining it thus far.

John Ryan
I think this highlights why many people were concerned with the Pope's statements. Being critical of the way Obamacare treats the abortion issue is a mainstream Catholic concern. The USCCB has been very vocal about it. The Little Sisters of the Poor are suing over it. There are fewer people more radically committed to social justice than they. But since the Pope's words were published, they have offered an easy way to mock and dismiss such concerns as right wing/Republican obsessions. Maybe Catholics will feel compelled to "shut up" about it. Not good at all. I wish that Roman Catholics were as infuriated with tax dollars that go to funding foreign wars and drone strikes, which murder so many innocent children. My parish prays for the unborn and our soldiers (and that is great), but I wish they would pray for the innocent persons killed by our government in its realpolitik wars. 4588686
Whereas your posts are completely unpredictable. Yeah, but I have the courtesy to dissuade people from reading what I write. When I pile my poo into a blog and try to get people to read it then you'll have a point.
4588686
For example, calling Socrates' article 'repetitious and predictable' is redundant. That's the sort of shitty writing that I proudly provide this forum.
