Apotheoun
I would not pay the "new hires" in Congress as much as a teacher. Teachers in the SF Bay Area make between 60,000 and 120,000 a year (depending upon the school district). Being a member of Congress should be a part-time job. CrossCuT
Republicans: "Lets shut the government down so we can stop something that we think will shut our government down" Maybe its a better idea to propose a trial period and NOT shut the government down? Apotheoun
The world will not fail if the federal government shuts down. I also think that Congress itself should return to the former practice of short sessions. In times past Congress was only in session for 3 to 6 months a year, and during the rest of the year the members of Congress returned to their districts. I think that a part-time Congress would be a good idea.

4588686
Heck, large parts of the government won't even be shut down during the government shutdown. That's right. Those parts which least benefit average people will keep on chugging along. Because congress cares about the defense contractors who pay them lots of money national defense. Apotheoun
True. Because our government, like any bureaucracy, is poorly run. Those running government agencies do not know how to, or they simply do not want to, prioritize what gets done and what does not. This is not just a problem at the federal level, it happens at the state and local levels as well, by usually threatening to cut off emergency services, while maintaining - at least in my town - unnecessary things, e.g., a summer camp even when there are no kids there. So, reductions in police and other emergency services are put in place, just so that the kids summer camp can be maintained. Why in the world does the city I live in need to own a summer camp? When I was a kid I went to summer camp, it was privately own, and kids parents - or the public school system for those in need - paid for us to go.
