Breaking Bad

I simply said that Firefly is better. I did not say that it is "scientifically" better, as if science could address the topic. I gave my opinion after having watched both shows (admittedly not the entirety of Breaking Bad, but enough to know what it was about).

Not really, because it is all a matter of opinion, and opinions are neither true nor false; instead, they simply are a subjective viewpoint.

The sites you listed give the opinions of a select group of individuals (in the case of IMDB anyone who registers), but that is all it gives. You will not find truth on those sites, nor will you find the one and only valid opinion on a certain subject by looking at those sites.

While that is true, one could argue (empirically speaking) that a mean score of a collection of opinions says more about quality than a single opinion.

However, I have never watched Breaking Bad or Firefly so what do I know.

I also like Hell on Wheels (AMC) and Game of Thrones (HBO), but I still like Firefly more than both of those shows.

We should hang out.

I too like Hell on Wheels and Game of Thrones.

Hell on Wheels, not so much the first couple of seasons, but much better this last season. I stuck with it because I love westerns.

Game of Thrones is almost right up there with Breaking Bad for me.

A lot of people tell me to watch "The Wire" but I'm just not into modern day cop shows.

"Revolution" was a show I tried to get into because I'm a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, but that show was just not good to me--mostly because of bad acting.

I like Mad Men too--for the same reason I like Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire--different time periods. It's cool to be taken back to those times.

Wait, popular opinion to decide what is better? Isn't that kind of like listening to the pop music scene when they said Britney Spears had talent?

The mean score is still just averaged opinions, which is not objective even if people want to see it as such. An opinion is a subjective viewpoint, a group of opinions when averaged remain what they were - a subjective viewpoint.

Mad Men has some Catholic themes too. Tom Hanks' son plays a young priest.

My mother loved Mad Men, but started to lose interest around the third season. I think she did not like the break up of Don Draper's family.

My mom was also a huge fan of Firefly, and so it didn't hurt Mad Men that the actress who played Yosafbridge on Firefly was on Mad Men.   :paco:

hahaha. He was sleeping with every woman within 30 miles of New York City...I think poor Betty can be forgiven for leaving him. My favorite character is Roger Sterling...poor guy is on the verge of getting old and he knows it.

My mom told me that she felt the show changed after their breakup. I haven't really watched it, but I had to download it for my mom so she could watch the episodes at her leisure and as often as she wanted.

I searched for a thread. Couldn't find one. That is a shame.

"That whole thing felt kinda shady, you know, like, morality-wise."

Yeah... I'm kinda surprised about that.

I only started watching Breaking Bad 2 weeks ago. And after I started I found out that the finale would be coming up. I watched all of season one, episode 1 and then I watched some episodes sporadically until I discovered a two-hour video on YouTube encapsulating all of the key events. That video saved me hours and hours… it ended after season 5a. I supplemented it with a few episodes here and there and read synopsises on Wikipedia.

So I cheated, but hey, I more than got the gist of it. The show is unlike anything I've ever seen before… it's like the longest movie. Very well made, with excellent acting, Breaking Bad is a cinematic morality tale… it's really like watching Shakespeare plays as someone has said somewhere. For me it seems to be summed up in what Jesus says in Matthew's Gospel, “what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" Walter White has shed so much blood to get his way to the top… and he's on the verge of losing his eternal soul. I think what really caught my interest was the way that Walter White transformed into Heisenberg… it was very convincing actually. What happened to him really can and does happen in real life. Interestingly, Walter is not the only one that has transformed. I don't want to give it away. I hate spoilers… and I've yet to watch the finale. I've caught up until “Granite State." Looking forward to finishing it…

Anyone who is interested in watching it, even now, should watch the 1st episode in its entirety and watch this video, and then watch the rest of the episodes on AMC TV online… they should be up there for a few weeks or so.
