ardillacid
Oh calamity! The inconvenience! Screw the people whose lives are saved because of these checkpoints! I dont want to be late to dinner! Do these checkpoints really catch that many people? How drunk does one have to be to willingly go through a checkpoint? I would like to see some arrest stats on these checkpoints...

Aloysius
the argument is not about drinking and driving, it's about the tactics we use to combat drinking and driving. similar to any argument about anti-terrorism programs... nobody disputes that you have to catch and fight terrorists, but you have to have limits to what can be done to find them. when someone questions a particular way people are looking for terrorists based upon what it does to ordinary people, it is completely illegitimate to respond by saying "well if people would just not commit terrorism then we wouldn't have to do this"... no, you have to accept that the bad things do get done, whether they be terrorism or drunk driving, and you have to set up what ways they can be protected against and what ways they cannot be. CatholicsAreKewl
From a policeman's perspective, I can see how it would get really annoying to deal with people who refuse to cooperate. The people in these videos weren't really in the wrong, though. Power has the potential to corrupt good people. it's unfair to be mad at a government official for disregarding a law to commit an act we disagree with when we allow him/her to ignore another law to do something for the good of society. Allowing unchecked power = immoral. Edited September 28, 2013 by CatholicsAreKewl

ardillacid
That guy is a jerk for getting his friend arrested. Really, that guy is the jerk? Not all the arse portal cops that actually smashed his window and arrested him for no reason? how about if people did not drink and drive these check points would not be used or needed. its really that simple. Statistics cited earlier showed they are essentially useless. They are not needed.
PhuturePriest
You know what, even if their efforts don't result in 137% DUI stops I think it's worth it even if they only stopped one. Thats one less drunk driver to kill your loved one on the road. Following this logic, we should have cops frisk everyone walking on the street. There's a 0000.1% chance that someone has an illegal gun and is intending to kill someone, but we should do it just in case because it's worth it, right? PhuturePriest
1. I thought the supreme court ruled check points are not illegal. 2. you do not have the right to drive a vehicle. if you don't want to be dui checkpointed, then give up the "privilege" of driving. we are not talking about rights here, we are talking about privilages. The Supreme Court also ruled Obamacare as constitutional. I wouldn't listen to much of what they have to say on what is legal/illegal and constitutional/unconstitutional. If its moral is another question. Although by law, it is law, so its not illegal. So are dui checkpoint. So to argue they are illegal makes no sense. According to law they are legal. Moral is a different question. Although legal, its black and white.

Maybe that's just my view but stopping 10,000 drunk drivers out of every 1,000,000 is a good thing and saves more than probable a signifigant portion of lives. havok579257
don't worry, if we all get special glasses or contacts that prove our government is run by aliens, then I don't think many people will argue they are a just and legal government. ardillacid
Can't big government people at least support efficiency? Or does everything has to be done as inefficiently as possible?
