Nihil Obstat
Interestingly enough, we were discussing this in one of my classes last week. The general consensus there was that we did not want to live forever - I know I sure don't! It reminds me of that movie with Bruce Willis called Surrogates where cyborgs are controlled by the humans while they are "safe" in their own home. They experienced no real human emotions and the husband and wife in the lead roles eventually get rid of their cyborgs and start living life normally again. Bit of a heavy-handed treatment of the old brain in a vat concept from western philosophy, but cool concept regardless.
Didacus
You can no more live inside a computer as you can inside a photograph. He's just kidding himself if he thinks this is possible. Methinks he is just dreaming and luring attention to himself.

Aya Sophia
Is this the best that atheism has to offer? Poor guy. Would love to see him discover the splendor and glory (and joy!) of the Source of it all.

If he believed he had one that is. :(
Semper Catholic
LOL I love the snarky comments about ALS. We've reached an all time low.
AccountDeleted
LOL I love the snarky comments about ALS. We've reached an all time low. If you read something snarky about what I posted then you have misunderstood what I meant. Perhaps you were joking and I misunderstand you?? What I was trying to say was that there is a freedom in loving God that allows one to see beyond the body. Hawking has used his mind to overcome the limitations of his body, but he has failed to realize that there is an even greater freedom in knowing God's love for each soul. No snarkiness intended. Aloysius
I think my description of an interactive talking book was pretty accurate, though if it was total AI and could keep learning as if it was using your personality to learn, I don't think I'd like that, who knows what kind of thoughts a machine would come up with under the influence of my crazy personality. the skynet of seastead catholic villages could doom humanity in my name! the idea itself, of putting the full amount of memories/personality data into a computer, is not so much of a problem. the soul is the principle of life and, sorry Mr. Data, machines are not and never will be alive. nothing that is not biologically alive can have a soul... the term soul refers to the immortal spirit of a rational life form, spirits are only present in things that are biologically alive--plants, animals, humans. beatitude
Not for nothing but isn't stephen Halking pretty much good as a brain in a jar? I mean what would really change for him? Is this really how you see people with Stephen Hawking's condition? 'Pretty much as good as a brain in a jar'? What an incredibly dehumanising, hurtful, and dangerous way to perceive people. :(

It was a really smug comment about what a waste he's made of the hidden blessing that ALS is. I'm sure you could hire an underground surgeon to sever your spine and make you a paraplegic since it's such a spiritually enviable position to be in.
