That is true.  But he did bring a lot of genuine reform to the Soviet Union

I think I admitted in my post that Khrushchev brought change in the Soviet Union, in fact the whole process of de-Stalinization was going to bring about some kind of change, but he also closed thousands of Churches that Stalin had allowed to re-open during World War II, and left open until his death in 1953, and he persecuted religious people. Moreover, he started the process of hospitalizing (instead of immediately killing) those he saw as his enemies. He was a brutal man, but perhaps not as openly brutal as Stalin had been.

Very true.  Russia does have a long history of violent imperialism in the Caucasus

And the Islamists have a long history of slitting the throats of the people that they capture.

Although your depiction of Chechnya ignores Russia's cruel occupation of Christian Georgia.

I do not believe that Russia is presently occupying the Republic of Georgia. There are Russian troops in South Ossetia, but I think the South Ossetians want them there. That said, I do agree that Russia acts like the United States does to those countries within its sphere of influence. I guess that comes with being a great power.

Sure do.  Shamel Basayev also sold captured Russian soldiers slavery.  It's really unfortunate that Russia's sadistic and totally unnecessary invasion of Chechnya in 1993 created an environment where a a cretin like Basayev could become a major regional player. It's also sad that Russia, as a member of the international community, treated both captured combatants and civilians in a way that put them on the same moral plane as Basayev

Im referring to Russia's historic occupation of Georgia.  The 2008 invasion was part of Russia's long history of invading and controlling Georgia.  This latest invasion was probably the least atrocious as the Georgian Army was committing real human rights abuses in Osetia.

Well, Georgia is independent now, and what is sometimes forgotten is that the Caucasus region was in dispute between two great powers, i.e., the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. Georgia was sometimes occupied by the Ottomans and liberated by the Russians, and vice versa.

Im glad the Russian Orthodox Church refused to include him amongst the New Martyrs.  That seems appropriate given Evgeny's participation in a war that is starkly in opposition to the Church's Just War tradition.

The period of the New Martyrs ended with the collapse in 1991 of the godless Bolshevik regime. He was martyred by Islamists in 1996.

I'm sorry, I meant to say canonized.

I think you mean glorified, and glorification works differently in Orthodoxy than canonization in Roman Catholicism. Veneration must first arise before a person is glorified, and that also involves the writing of icons that extol the person's virtue, and that has all been going on since Evgeny's martyrdom at the hands of Islamic infidels. I have read reports that one of his icons is even wonder-working, and his devotion is even quite popular in ROCOR and not just in the Moscow Patriarchate. So, will he be glorified, which simply means that he will be officially added to the sanctoral cycle of the Moscow Patriarchate or ROCOR? I think so. I just do not know when it will happen, and whether it will be the ROCOR synod or the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate that is the first to liturgically glorify him.
