AugustineA
I kinda wish I could be manic for two weeks with no negative symptoms. I'd finish all my work and relax all semester. :bounce:
HisChildForever
"Increase in goal-oriented behavior" usually means that the person gets obsessive and can enter the psychotic realm. At the very least the person is extremely fixated on whatever task at the expense of everything else -- sleep, food, hygiene. Anyway if you were manic for two weeks you'd end up hospitalized well before those 14 days are up. Just sayin'.
arfink
I have had manic episodes, especially in the months immediately following my cessation of ADD medication. Not cool. You think it's awesome, until you realize you're just being obsessive, not productive. And the burnout... yikes.
blazeingstar
At the level they are dumbing down college, I could work a full time job, cook for a family and STILL complete a graduate class in 2 weeks.

AugustineA
I'm just kidding.. :smile3: Though some of the case studies we've been looking at include people who seek after manic episodes. That's why they're always dumping their medication. :bounce:
zabbazooey
I wasn't very productive at all while manic. I had a hard time focusing my attention and calming the racing thoughts that were going a million miles a minute. And then gut-wrenching anxiety followed soon after. Mania sucks! Although I do kind of like it because I become this outgoing, funny, charming person. I'm usually highly introverted and kind of awkward, lol. AnneLine
I have a friend with a wife who struggles with this. Trying to convince her that she is in a manic state is a real challenge -- because she feels great and doesn't get it that she isn't anywhere near as effective as she thinks she is. Pray for her.. .her husband and kids are just at the end of their ropes.... Had a woman who was manic in one of my employment workshops at one point. She literally talked a blue streak and was convinced she could do ANYTHING!!!! Literally! Half-way through the workshop, she jumped up and exclaimed, "I have a job interview now - I need to go!" Everyone smiled at her and wished her well as she left. I have no idea if she really did, but I rather doubt it.... and she would NOT have gotten the job if she was in that space when she interviewed...... Bottom line: mania feels GREAT while you are manic. But there are actually 2 other sides... the depressed side is pretty obvious.... curled up feeling horrible is NEVER a great inducement to repeat THAT experience. But what is hard for people who are or have been manic to get is that the manic high isn't normal. So while the meds make them feel 'better' (as in not depressed any more) they aren't feeling as good as they were when they were manic. And of course they don't LIKE feeling normal.... SO... it is not just that they 'think they are better so they stop taking meds.' It's not just about logic.... I think part of it is I forget how horrible the depressed end of the cycle feels, but dang it I want that ENERGETIC manic high!!!!!! So they tell themselves that they are feeling better, don't need the meds, and get rewarded with a mania... which is a powerful reward UNTIL it converts and they are back to the down side of things.... Definitely they need our prayers and love and support.... Edited September 24, 2013 by AnneLine
