TheresaThoma
You have given up and are quite used to the fact that your lyrics will not make any grammatical sense or much sense in general. You can sing 3 or 4 bars of music while staying on the same note and this is not odd.
brandelynmarie
I'm a mezzo soprano, but I remember helping my alto friends in choir. :) Yes, ultimate weirdness in Alto land :p.
TheresaThoma
Yup. Though I have noticed a benefit to being an alto, is when you start learning chant it is really easy because you are used to having multiple words on the same note. AnneLine
".......^.......~.........." Yup, that's an alto line. (Spoken like a mezzo who has been netted into alto a few times....)
AccountDeleted
I sing mezzo and if I am stuck singing second, I get pulled off by those who are singing the melody. :)

EmilyAnn
When I was in choir at school occasionally the sopranos were roped into singing alto parts...very very weird! Singing alto parts feels totally unnatural to me. I am most definitely a soprano!

AnneLine
Yup!!!! :) And as far as the oddness factor of singing alto when one is a soprano... therein lies a tale. When I was in high school and a young adult, I was blessed to sing as part of the Solemn Mass Choir of St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco. We were easily regarded as one of the 3 (if not the premier) Catholic choirs in San Francisco. In addition to volunteers like myself, we had an octet from the San Francisco Opera who supported us (this also meant they KNEW they would have SOMETHING by way of singers at Christmas!)(so many people go away....) Anyway, the octet were WONDERFUL about working with those of us who wanted to really learn to sing better (especially the youngest ones like me!) When I hit about 18 years, my voice developed what can only be called a 'crack' right around High "C". NOT good for a soprano. I was horrified, but the female singers from the Octet just laughed and said, "You know, not only boys have to deal with their voices changing! You're just the right age! And we know what to do about it!" And the solution was for THIS soprano... (who had been able to hit High G with no trouble!) was told lthat for the next 6 to 12 months, I would now be singing ALTO. And that I was not to even THINK of hitting a high "C". I was horrified.. and totally demoralized when I ran into those Alto lines... ".......^.......~.........." AAAAHHGGGH!!!! how the mighty are fallen!!! But it was a wonderful prescription in so many ways! It rested my upper range... and the crack disappeared. I learned to really sight read well... because I now had to learn to sight read that alto line with about 1 week's warning... I had to learn to really focus on singing my part without being distracted by the (longed for) alto and tenor lines (I LOVE the tenor lines, by the way... the are so beautiful!!!) And I had a tremendous experience I will post in a moment!
AnneLine
One day... we were singing a motet after communion... and we were located on the high altar over to one side. Our choir director, John Klobucar, of happy memory, had drilled into us that, no MATTER WHAT, we were to keep watching him! If there was a fire, we watched... if there was an earthquake... we were to watch him. BECAUSE, as he reminded us, if something went wrong, he could get us BACK if we could just trust he knew what to do. So I had worked super hard on one of those silly alto lines. ".......^.......~.........." I knew the Soprano (and the tenor!) by heart, so I really had to work at learning the new, undesirable part. And So we started the motet. At some point... I realized that there was only one voice singing. .. a lone alto... ME! ... because everyone else had gotten lost. It had NEVER happened before. Even the OPERA people had lost the piece! I was ready to just stop... but I looked at John who mouthed to me, "Don't you dare stop!" I kept on going with that silly alto line... a sole voice in GIANT st. Ignatius church! (see below). The Octet managed to tune back in based on my alto... and we finished the piece with everyone singing. Good grief... hope I never have to do THAT again!!!!! But the octet came and hugged me... all 8 of them!!!! Yup, I was blessed by God to have that training..... And THIS is a big building to fill with sound!!!!!
